An Unknown Time in The Path of Many Forks, 5148 Village of Fairies in the Feywild
"Are you guys... Sure you wanna to do this?" Rill was biting his lip as he stirred the soup, eyeing the bowls nervously.
After the anti-magic storm had passed outside - which had made Tehodis a little ill, due to her need for magical energy - the trio had gone back out into the world to explore some more. Rill had taken them to Dyalind, and through what he called the 'Forest of Flavours' where most edible things were grown. It had taken all of Tehodis' willpower - but more of Rill and Endless' - to ensure she didn't eat things on sight, as it all looked delicious. By the end of the trip, Endless was feeling it as well. It had been a while since he had eaten - and they both knew that he would need to eat something soon, whether it was here, or back in Fortuna. Rill had insisted he help them find a fairy circle, but Tehodis and Endless had insisted otherwise.
They were going to stay.
"Yes, absolutely," Tehodis nodded, sitting cross-legged on Rill's bed in an outfit made by a fashion-talent fairy. The fairy had given it to Tehodis, along with the offering of a delicious looking golden apple, and Rill had allowed only the dress. After all, the one she had arrived it was not fitted to her, and was certainly not fitted to flying. Now, she wore something skin-tight like Rill - but with layers of blue - seemingly moving - patterned fabrics on top to offer her some modesty. The outfit was warm, cozy, and fit Tehodis like a glove. "I would have also eaten the candy apples in Dyalind, and the apple from the fashion fairy, and the pie from the forest of flavours. Rill... I'm certain this is what I want."
Rill still didn't seem convinced. He pretended the soup wasn't ready, and put the stem back on the pumpkin. "You can't change your mind once you do this. Not only will a fairy circle not send you back, or the tornados, but Haelrin would make sure you didn't find some other way - even if there was one. You'll be bound to this place. And it's not all sight-seeing and fun and games and--"
Tehodis cut him off, moving to grab Endless' hand in an act of solidarity - "Yes, you've told us. We'll be expected to contribute, to work here in the Feywild. Just as we would need to do back home. There's no difference, aside from... Well, here there aren't monsters chasing me. Here we... We have something to live for."
Rill sighed and rubbed his temples a little, knowing Tehodis wouldn't be shaken. "What about you, Endy? Any chance I can convince ya otherwise?"

The smell of the soup wafting through the small home was starting to drive Endless just a little crazy. He had never been the type to really need an especially large amount of food (though he sometimes wondered if maybe he'd be a little bigger if he ate more) but going a little over two days now with almost no food was really pushing it. It had initially been somewhat easy to ignore when they first arrived, what with all the excitement of the magical environment, and the subsequent exhaustion, and sleep. But then Rill took them to Dyalind, after the storm passed and they'd gotten some sleep, and Endless had been assaulted by the smell of good foods everywhere.
He honestly envied Tehodis, a little. He learned from Rill that she could feed on magical energy because she was a Kina, and so even though she wanted food, she didn't need it. Endless had been starving though. Rill had noticed, and at one point while they were in the Forest of Flavors, he had waited until Tehodis was distracted and slipped Endless a small roll of bread - quickly assuring Endless that it was food he'd gotten the last time he was in Fortuna, and that it was still good.
Though Endless was thankful, and scarfed it down swiftly, he felt almost exasperated that Rill wasn't just giving him Feywild food. He abstained, of course, because Rill asked him to and Endless didn't want to let him down, and he even helped Rill restrain Tehodis, but goddesses all; he was starving.
So when Tehodis grabbed his hand and informed Rill in no uncertain terms that she was sure she wanted to stay, that she was certain she knew what she was getting into, Endless almost felt compelled to nod his agreement just to satisfy his appetite. The smell of the soup was just too tempting.
But even so, he took a deep breath, quashed his appetite for a moment, and gave the matter serious consideration one more time. He looked at Tehodis, at her new outfit that looked like it worked really well on her. It had that same sense of foreign high fashion as Rill's clothes, something that looked clearly different and yet fit in with the sensibilities of this world. He hadn't gotten himself anything like that, but he thought he might like to if he stayed. He thought back to the trip to Dyalind, and how aside from the roar of his appetite it had been a magical place, enchanting and colorful, and how none of the people there had given him the kinds of weird looks he usually got elsewhere - which was kind of surprising, considering he was still a mortal in a land of mostly fairies.
But he also remembered what Rill told them could be in store. Lots of work to do, occasional dangers from more magic storms, and the expectations of Haelrin's people should they come calling... But lastly, he thought about yesterday, when Rill, he, and Tehodis were looking out over Dyalind from a high building, taking in the sparkling sights below. About how he'd looked over at Rill and Rill had looked at him and it felt like a different kind of magic.
And maybe Endless is just a stupid sixteen-year-old who likes hearing Rill call him 'Endy', but when he looks back up at Rill, now, waiting on his answer, he can only come up with one thing to say.
(Also he's very, very hungry)
"I really want to stay, Rill. I'm sure of it. Now, can I please have some of that soup?"
Rill gave him an uncertain look, but if Endless was asked, it also looked like a part of him might have been pleased with the answer. Endless liked to think he'd be missed if he left. Again he was struck by the notion that maybe the Feywild accelerated your perception of time, on some level, because he felt like he'd gotten a lot closer to Rill and Tehodis both over just these couple of days then should have been possible, but he felt it.
Maybe Rill felt it too, because after sighing one more time he finally relented. He turned, lifted the stem from his pumpkin, and poured out two servings of soup into bowls. And after what felt like an eternity, he set the bowls in front of Endless and Tehodis.

Tehodis didn't wait.
The soup smelled too good, and the idea of staying here in the Feywild was just too tempting. Too perfect. What she didn't realize, was that the Feywild did that on purpose. That Haelrin, God of this place, did that for good reason. Though, even if she had realized, she likely would have made the same decision. Besides, it was the best soup she could remember having - not that she could remember another soup before now. This one, however, tasted like magic. It felt rejuvenating to her, despite the fact that food ought to have no effect. It felt alive within her. It tasted like every favourite flavour she could conceive of, working together in harmony.
"Wow," She managed to sputter out, putting the bowl down after the first large sip. Her vision was coloured with bright sparks of light, and she was light-headed again. Too much magic, perhaps? She reached out to grab something, and Rill steadied her. "Careful, careful," He tried to help her lie down, but she just wanted to stand up. "Uwah," She moaned, the sounds slow and unwieldy. In her head, she thought she had said I need to see, but she hadn't managed the language. Instead, she used Rill to steady herself as she stumbled to the end of the flower, performing the knock he had taught them. The flower began to open up, but Rill quickly knocked again and closed it.
"Not now, Tehodis," He pulled her gently, but firmly, back to the bed, stopping to make sure Endless wasn't attempting something similar. "You're going to be radiating fey magic right now. If Haelrin's scouts notice it, they'll be on their way. So just... Stay put." Once Tehodis was collapsed on the bed, the magic making her almost drunk with the excess it provided her magical soul, he turned to Endless, gripping his arms and making sure Endless wasn't having a similar issue. Kina were always easy pickings for Haelrin - whatever Endless was, not so much. "You alright, Endy?"

The first thing he'd felt after taking a deep swig of the soup, once it had finally been offered, was sweet, sweet relief. It tasted amazing and he swore he could hear his stomach thanking him personally for finally giving it something. The solid bits - which felt like potatoes and vegetables but who knows what they were in this world - left him feeling more instantly relieved than he had on any previous occasion where food had been scarce for him. The second thing he felt, though, was a deep pull from somewhere inside. He ignored this at first, feeling as though this was likely just the magic of the food taking effect and locking him into this world, something he was already expecting to happen. So he took another couple of drinks, chewing reverently on the chunky bits and enjoying the flood of incredible flavors that came with it.
But after swallowing his third mouthful, that strange pull inside of him became more and more pronounced, and Endless started to realize it was less of a pull and more of an odd, twisting feeling in his gut, the same kind of feeling he got when he felt incredibly, deeply anxious about something.
He put his bowl down. Something felt wrong, and he had no idea what it was. It was like something deep inside of him was objecting to what he'd just done, as though it was rejecting the food, and he suddenly felt like he needed to undo it, he needed to get rid of it. But strangely, in spite of feeling this way, he didn't feel sick, and nothing like vomit would come to him.
He was so distracted by this sudden and overwhelming feeling of wrongness that he barely even noticed that Tehodis had practically been having a fit beside him. He was gripping his knees now, breathing shaky, as he managed to register that she had tried to leave and Rill had stopped her, had laid her down, and then Rill was suddenly in front of him. He was gripping Endless's arms tightly, asking if he was okay, and his touch acted like a slight ground for Endless, pulling him back from the brink of the panic attack he felt like he was about to have.
Endless lifted his hands, one gripping Rill's wrist tightly and the other scrambling for purchase in his scarf, and he shook his head fitfully.
"No, I'm-" he started, unsure of how to finish it. He did not feel alright, but he didn't feel sick. His appetite felt satisfied, and his stomach wasn't trying to get rid of its contents, but his nerves were on fire and he was practically hyperventilating. Something in his head was telling him this was not okay, that he was not okay. "I don't know," he gasped out.
"Oh jeez..." Rill said, his voice heavy with worry. Endless wasn't looking at his eyes right now, but at the moment they were clouded with a horrible weight of regret. "I knew it, I knew it, I shouldn't have let you do this... do you know what's wrong? What do you feel like?"
"I don't know!" Endless answered, his voice raising an octave. "I felt fine, I felt good, and then... then I didn't. I don't f-feel sick, or, I, uh... I don't-"
He was finding it increasingly hard to complete sentences right now, and his hands were starting to shake.
"Shh, shh, don't talk anymore," Rill said quickly, pulling Endless closer and wrapping his arms tightly around him. In any other circumstance, Endless might have thought he'd died and gone to heaven, or was having a vivid fantasy, but now was not a time he could possibly enjoy the feeling of Rill hugging him close and rocking back and forth with him. Rill wasn't doing this for any suggestive reasons; he was trying to keep Endless grounded, trying to stop the shaking, trying to make sure Endless knew there was someone there for him while he was evidently losing his mind to panic. "You're okay, you're okay," Rill said, trying to calm him down.
The fairy glanced up back at the bed, where Tehodis was sprawled and moving her limbs around haphazardly. She seemed completely tripped out on sensation, the Fey magic in her system overwhelming her on her first taste of it. Rill had been expecting he'd need to keep an eye on her, to make sure she got through it alright. Magical creatures ingesting Fey food always experienced it intensely the first time.
He had not been expecting whatever was happening to Endless right now, and it was honestly scaring him. He had no idea what was wrong, Endless had no idea what was wrong, and Rill had never seen nor heard of someone reacting like this to eating Feywild food. Endless felt like he was close to sobbing.
"Hey, hey, Endy, c'mon," Rill urged, standing slowly and trying to pull Endless to his feet. "Try to walk around a bit, 'kay? Take deep breaths."
Endless tried to do as he was instructed, standing shakily on his feet, taking a few shuddering breaths, and slowly loosening the vice grip he had on Rill's clothing. He was starting to calm down, he felt like. Starting to, but something about it wasn't going away. His eyes stung as something inside kept telling him he'd just made a mistake, that he was't supposed to have done that, that this was wrong, this wasn't what he was meant to do.
He didn't know how to shut that part of himself up. It kept gnawing at him, deep in his gut, no matter how he tried to pull himself under control. He couldn't think about this, not right now. He needed to distract himself, he needed to find a way to forget what he'd just done, so he threw himself into an alternative concerning thought.
"H-how is Tehodis?" he croaked, suddenly feeling extremely thirsty but not at all wanting to ask for a drink of anything that was in this home.
Rill stepped back a bit, seeing Endless was capable of standing on his own now, but he kept his hands firmly on the other boy's arms. "Compared to you? I'd say she's lookin' like a million gold."
Endless managed a shaky chuckle, a shallow apology, and then pulled himself from Rill's grip, taking unsteady steps over to the bed and seating himself gingerly on the edge. Tehodis looked to Endless like her vision was swimming, but she managed to focus on him when he came into view. He did his best to put on a smile. "Tehodis? Are yo-u hholding up okay-y..?"
Post by Tehodis Kitai on Nov 26, 2016 10:28:45 GMT -7
The magic was coursing through her, and her body was definitely getting used to it... But she was still on a bit of a bad high. Endless swum into her vision, and she smiled a little, and he smiled back. As she focused on his face, her vision cleared, and she found herself groggy, but coherent. "Y-yeah," She managed to get out, pulling herself upright. The movements were exaggerated, almost as if she were moving in slow motion.
"I didn't expect that to be... So powerful." Rill nodded as he prepared two wet cloths, one for each of them. "Yeah, you Kina have an especially hard time with it the first time. But I promise--" He came back to them and laid a cool cloth on each of their heads, "It won't be like this the next time. Think of it uh, like an inoculation of sorts. Now that you've done it once, you'll be good. You can eat freely but... Just remember, the more you eat, the longer you'll have to stay here for. So... Maybe a diet is in order?" He attempted to lighten the mood a bit, ushering a small laugh from Tehodis, which granted him a smile.
"Bring on the feast, then," She said, holding the cloth to her head and reveling in the coolness of it. It felt so much better. It felt as if she was being brought back to the ground. Her feet felt stable. Her head felt the proper weight once more. As she cleared up, Rill focused his attentions on Endless. His was less expected. "This might seem a tad rude, Endy dear, but... What race are you, exactly? I've never seen anyone... No one has reacted quite like that before, not that I've seen. You... I was scared for you."
Tehodis had missed Endless' panic attack, but now noticed that he was still a little shaky, a little worn down. She had recovered quickly, him not so much. She had to admit, he wasn't a race she recognized - but she also had little memory of even herself. She thought she had just forgotten the obvious. But if Rill didn't know - and yet knew she was a Kina so simply - perhaps Endless was something rare, something special. She was curious to hear his answer.
Post by Endless Laeretti on Nov 26, 2016 15:56:01 GMT -7
Endless pressed the cold cloth Rill had handed him against his forehead gratefully, taking in more lung fulls of air and closing his eyes. He was glad to see Tehodis already starting to recover, but he wished he could say the same for himself. He had no idea what had come over him, what was still bothering him... In spite of how starved he'd been, he didn't find the idea of eating anything else appealing right now. It sounded more appealing to go on that diet Rill joked about.
Endless looked up ad blinked, evidently surprised, when Rill asked about his race. He immediately glanced back down, feeling his cheeks probably coloring in embarrassment. He hadn't been asked about that in a long while, what with his recent habit of avoiding people, and he had almost started to think no one in this world was going to question it at all.
"I'm just a human..." he replied, though his voice was somewhat sullen. "I know it might not look like it, what with all of," he gestured vaguely at his face, with his unnaturally pale skin, the strangely-slanted-in-places bone structure, the obviously over-sized and pupil-less eyes, "this, but... I guess you'd just call this a birth defect."
He honestly hated talking about it out loud, as it only succeeded in dredging up lots of unwanted memories of bad experiences across his arguably short lifespan thus far. He definitely didn't want to go into detail about Artavia's radiation, or use the 'M' word to describe himself. He attempted to shrug it off, focusing instead on the comforting feel of the wet cloth. "So a weird human, but still just a human," he mumbled.
Post by Tehodis Kitai on Nov 26, 2016 16:10:51 GMT -7
Tehodis smiled and shook her head, "I would say you're one of the least weird people I know." It seemed heartfelt for a moment, and a moment of comfortable silence passed over them... Until Rill blanched and then asked, somewhat jokingly, "Wait, don't you have amnesia or something?"
Tehodis laughed, and reiterated her point: "Exactly. Between you, Endy, and the weird toothy man in my head, Endy is by far the least weird." They laughed, and for a moment everything seemed to have calmed. Tehodis felt better, Endless had cheered up - even if just the smallest bit - and Rill was back to joking, instead of worrying if his two new friends were going to die from his cooking - or worse. There was still a niggling bit of him that worried deeply about Haelrin's scouts. He had never befriended outsiders before, let alone fed they fey food. He knew that in this flower they'd be concealed from Haelrin's diviners... But Tehodis had opened it for a moment. Was that enough for them to notice? How long would the two have to stay here before it was safe to go out? Rill wished he'd done a bit more research.

Two Days Pass... Dyalind, The City of Sweets
Though Endless wouldn't know it, these past couple of days have been something of a relief for Rill. No one from Haelrin's castle had come to find Endless or Tehodis after the food incident, and when they'd been holed up in his flower for at least half a day and had stopped exhibiting too many signs of impairment by the fey food, Rill finally determined it was safe for them to go out. Endless didn't want to worry Rill or Tehodis, but the honest truth was he never truly felt better after his meal, and each time it came time to eat again he could feel a similar, but much less intense, feeling of objection inside of him.
But what could he say? He had already eaten the food. He was bound to this place now, and he needed to eat if he was to survive. He was thankful that the food no longer sent him into a full on panic attack, and it still certainly tasted fantastic, but... he couldn't feel okay eating it, and he had to keep hiding that.
Today they'd gone to Dyalind again, Rill informing them that this time they'd actually be able to eat the things they encountered, and to make the best of it because Rill certainly didn't have enough free time to constantly go to this place again for a while - it was supposed to be a vacation spot, after all. Tehodis of course had simply been over the moon at the thought.
The moon...
Endless was sitting alone at the moment. A few minutes ago, Tehodis had said she wanted to check out an incredibly appetizing and simultaneously adorable-looking shop of cookingware, and Endless had told her and Rill to go ahead without him - he felt like a good sit, he'd told them, and so he sat himself down on a nearby bench and left them to it. But while they were gone, he found himself looking at the sky, tinted a shade of soft green that reminded him of pleasant minty flavors.
It was never night here. He never saw the sky go dark, didn't see the stars peeking out. There was no moon. Back in Fortuna, Endless never quite understood why he always anticipated the sunset, why he felt so eager to see the moon when he hated what it did to his eyes. He thought he'd be better off without that, without having any concern for his eyes lightning up and weirding anyone out (although here in the feywild, he reasoned that it probably wouldn't do that anyway). But now that he had actually been without it for a while... he couldn't quite describe the feeling it left in him. It was a mournful feeling deep inside, almost like a feeling of loss.
And when his body gave its objections whenever he'd swallow some fey food, he realized that that, too, reminded him somewhat of loss. He and Tehodis had been here in the Feywild for just under five days now - a little over a month in Fortuna - and he felt like everything he was doing here just felt wrong.
There was also something weird about the fey people. They had all been extremely nice when he first met them, when he was first touring this city. It seemed like every fairy with a spare moment stopped to say hello as they passed, or offer goodies that Rill had to politely turn down. But since leaving Rill's flower, it was... well, they weren't exactly unkind, certainly not. But Endless got the impression like they just didn't care anymore. Instead of receiving waves or smiles of acknowledgement, most of the fairies just kept going about their business, hardly paying him any mind. Where before they kept offering gifts to Tehodis and warm welcomes, now most of the fairies running stores just offered standard pleasantries and gave Tehodis a price tag if she wanted something.
The place hadn't exactly gone cold, but it felt a lot less warm than before. It felt... well, it felt like back home.
Except at least home had a moon.
Endless knitted his brows in frustration as he kept staring at the sky, one leg pulled up on the bench with him with his arms wrapped around it. He just wanted to see the moon. He wanted to see night, and stars, and a sky that was dark because it was normal and not because some negative magic storm was rolling through. A sinking feeling dropped in his belly as he realized: he missed Fortuna.
"Hey! Whatcha starin' at?" Rill's voice asked, snapping his attention back to the present. The fairy had emerged from the store with Tehodis behind him, carrying a new cooking pan while Tehodis munched on a piece of chocolate that looked like it had once been a teapot.
He forced his expression into a more pleasant one. "Nothing really, just watching the sky. You find what you wanted in there, Tehodis?" he asked.
It was hard to keep his tone sounding pleased when even the pretty, glittering sight of Dyalind looked more dull now than it had before.
Post by Tehodis Kitai on Nov 26, 2016 23:23:22 GMT -7
Tehodis was worried about Endless. He had been so distant over the last couple of days, she had seen something in his moon-like eyes that seemed... Darker these days. She worried to Rill as Endless slept about such things, concerned that the fey magic was having some ill effect. Rill would always share in her worries - and perhaps hold a unique kind of bother regarding Endless' condition. "There's no way to reverse it for him, is there? No special method?" She would ask. Rill would shake his head. There wasn't a way. That wasn't how the Feywild worked. Any mortal inflicted with fey magic would be here until the magic wore off - or until Haelrin permitted them leave. "Then we go to ask him." Rill would tell her no, with an emphatic energy, that would only make things worse.
...But as they spent the day in Dyalind, she couldn't stop thinking about it. The risk could be worth it, if Endless could stop being so... What was the word? Sad didn't seem strong enough. Miserable? No. Depressed...? Perhaps. She could hold all the risk. Perhaps... Perhaps barter herself for Endless' freedom. Her forever, Endless never. Haelrin, from what she had heard, enjoyed games and gambles and deals.
Endless once again needed a break, sending Rill and Tehodis on without him. Rill was growing more concerned, and his distraction made it easy for Tehodis to slip away for a moment. Rill would look from the store windows to Endless, pretending to look at what was stocked there. Tehodis would go deeper into the store looking for the right kind of person. The one who didn't just ignore her presence. The one who didn't smell her and know she had eaten fey food. The one who seemed... To be watching. It gave her a chill, it gave her a flash of a toothy smile and a deep voice dripping the words Morning blue, but it gave her a drive. When she approached the fairy attempting to spy on her, the fairy girl was shocked. When Tehodis asked how to get in touch with Haelrin, the shock faded to confusion, and then... Glee.
"I can take you to him right now, if you'd like," The fairy woman told her, pulling her high-necked purple collar up to her ears, "If you'll just follow me--"
"No, you'll do, if you're one of those. One of Haelrin's scouts, right?" Tehodis was casual, nonchalant. Surprise registered on the fairy woman's face again. "Perfect. Tell me. What does Haelrin feel about trades?"
When the conversation was done - which didn't take long - Tehodis pretended she had been observing a chocolate teapot that was still capable of brewing tea without melting. Rill had come to find her, apologized for losing her, she smiled and joked about how she could live in a store such as this. They left. And Endless was still there, looking... What was that word again? Depressed.
When Rill smiled and greeted him, Endless turned his expression into the same 'pleasant' look he'd been wearing too much lately, the one that didn't reach those eyes. Those eyes that had once been so full of life, but were now so blank.
"I did yeah," She answered with a smile, holding up the teapot, "I wonder if everything you brew in it will taste like chocolate?" She didn't really care about the teapot. It was charming. But she had gotten something much more valuable in that shop.
A meeting with Haelrin.
"How about you, Endy? What do you want to do? We could go flying in the forests again, or maybe Rill knows another neat place--?"
Post by Endless Laeretti on Nov 27, 2016 15:39:32 GMT -7
Endless wasn't really sure what he wanted to do. Well, scratch that, he did know he wanted to go home. But he couldn't very well go and say that. It had been his own choice to eat the food of the Feywild, and to stay here. Rill had tried to warn him, and he'd insisted that he was sure. What good would it do him to show his regret now? There was nothing to be done about it.
He stood up from the bench, humming as though pondering Tehodis's question. "When do you have to get back to work, Rill?" he asked.
The fairy chuckled nervously. "Tomorrow. I've already taken a few days off helpin' you guys out, and I already used my vacation time this year, soooo...."
Endless managed a small smile. "So we should take advantage of today while we have it. In that case, what do you want to do?"
Rill crossed his arms and contemplated this for a moment, looking between Endless ad Tehodis as though deciding what the best course of action was. Endless also looked at the woman, who unlike him seemed like she was right at home in this world. These past couple of days she'd been smiling bigger, more realistic smiles. Before, Endless had the impression that her expressions were always airy and distant, likely due to her amnesiac state, but it seemed like she was gradually becoming more solid in the world as time passed, her eyes having more focus and life to them. Even now, she seemed as though she was oddly focused on something, and Endless wondered if she was just thinking really intently about how she was going to use her new chocolate teapot.
Rill cleared his throat, grabbing Endless's attention back, and he was a little surprised to see the Fairy suddenly looking a little nervous. "Well, actually... So, Tehodis?" he said, an ingratiating grin on his face. "How... cozy do you think you are walking around on your own for a little while? 'Cuz, well, if you're okay with it, I was thinking I could... maybe go somewhere with just Endy?"
He seemed incredibly embarrassed to have said it out loud, and Endless was pretty sure his face was as bright red as his hair right now. Was he... was he imagining it, or was Rill more or less trying to ask him on an actual date??
