The man certainly did have resilience.
No sooner had Tehodis suggested (Vincent was fairly sure) that Vincent get Kikuriku out of his icy clothes did Kiku himself simply get up and take care of the task. It was without much modesty, which was seemingly unfortunate for the abashed-looking Miss Kitai (she had promptly turned her attention well away after having discovered a blanket in the supply bin), but Vincent supposed that when one was freezing to death they likely didn't have much of a care for ceremony or propriety.
Kikuriku was now seated in the boat, wrapped in the thick blanket, and Vincent was fairly sure he'd actually be fine now; those blankets were woven especially thick, as they were meant to serve as warmth to those who may have fallen overboard prior to being taken aboard the life boat. Much like had happened to Kikuriku, of course, except without the scenario that he came from a sinking ship. Point being, that blanket was designed to be as warm as possible, and even while he was nude underneath he would likely be feeling nice and toasty in due time.
He asked then what the plan was, and suggested enjoying the idea of simply being 'let go'. Vincent kept his eyes fixed on the horizon, where the ship was steadily becoming a mere glowing dot in the night - its sailing speed and Vincent's rowing had already seen to it that a good portion of distance was between them. They could still see it, but by now it was too dark out for anyone aboard the ship to see them, if they looked. They were in the clear so long as the ship didn't abruptly change course. He continued to row quietly for a moment. Now that he was no longer consumed by adrenaline, now that he wasn't so focused on just keeping them all alive, now that he had a moment of pause and quiet...
It was beginning to come crashing in. Everything over the last couple of hours. The information that had come to light, so suddenly and drastically. Even if he wanted to believe in a part of Woodrow still, to think that maybe he was truly innocent and just misunderstood, the man's guilt could not be denied with how he behaved. An innocent man didn't try to excuse transgressions, he simply supplied calm evidence to have not committed them. An innocent man didn't react violently towards confrontation with the truth. An innocent man didn't deliberately avoid ordering Tehodis to stop following orders that had been illegally implanted into her. And an innocent man certainly didn't toss his longest friend to the wolves for daring to speak against him.
Vincent gripped the oars in a white-knuckled grip, and if he'd been able to see his own face, he'd have seen the break in his usual calm. The way he bit lightly at his bottom lip, his eyes turned towards his lap and filled with fury. Loss. Resignation. He wanted to scream, to hit something. He wanted to hearken back to his hot-blooded teenaged days and simply resolve his feelings with a violent outburst.
Instead the wave came and went, and instead, he was left with a feeling of hollow emptiness. Markus Woodrow had been the closest thing to family Vincent had had since he had lost his own. The man had been nearly everything for him for the past eleven years. His only friend. His trusted companion. Someone who would correct the wrongdoings in the world, and who would aid Vincent in finding justice for his family. Markus Woodrow wound up being just another scum bag, and it felt just as much like losing his family again as it did like betrayal.
He dropped the oars, letting them hang slack in their fastenings, slouched forward, and rested his face in one palm, his fingers pushing his glasses up and out of the way. He took a long, steady breath, and stayed like that for a while.
"Markus Woodrow will not stop hunting us for as long as he is alive," Vincent eventually replied. "He is nothing if not dogged. And we are now direct witnesses to his unlawful behavior. The man he is working with, Thomas Dunn, the one who afflicted Miss Kitai, surely wants me dead as well. He will have been the one responsible for Katerine's presence in my room. And so long as you live, Miss Kitai, you are living proof of Dunn's crimes. So no, Kikuriku, he will not simply let us go."
He pulled his face up from his palm, not bothering to fix his glasses and instead exposing his tired-looking eyes, perhaps more bloodshot than they were earlier. He couldn't simply resign himself to this, nor either of them. He hadn't gotten them out of danger for nothing.
"First we need to get to Aissic. It's the closest to us from our current position, and it won't take us long to arrive. The Noble Eastwind will beat us there, of course, which means it will be crawling with officers. I'll navigate us to a hidden port. From there we need to get aboard the first ship to Artavia. It's beyond his legal reach, and I can get Miss Kitai the help she needs there. It's also the only place we'll be able to make Thomas answer for his crimes."

Kikuriku didn't even hesitate, and Tehodis couldn't understand that. She was tempted to look, to see what she'd avoid admitting she had thought about earlier, when they were alone, when it was just them, before all of the insanity happened - but no. No, that was just. She made herself laugh at Kiku's comments, her face looking out to sea, towards the disappearing Eastwind. The laugh turned into a genuine smile, and she settled with a sigh into the seat behind her.
Relief. That's what she felt. Her adrenaline had completely dissipated now, and the distance from... him was aiding her focus. She was thinking clearly - her own thoughts. Not Blue's thoughts, and not... The Diviner's thoughts. She was thinking-
Do you think Woodrow is just going to let us go? The name stabbed at her mind, and she reached up to rub her temple. A ringing filled her ears and she watched the Eastwind with sudden desire. No. Don't start, She told herself, taking a deep breath and standing, moving to sit near Vincent (and definitely trying to avoid looking Kiku in the eye, he was covered by the blanket now, but a blanket was just a blanket and--), he looked... Not quite broken, Vincent never looked broken, but certainly worse for wear. His usual mask was... Cracked, maybe. She reached out to give his shoulder a light, comforting squeeze, not knowing what else to do or say, but then--
Markus Woodrow will not stop hunting us for as long as he is alive. And there it was again. She bit her lip suddenly and roughly, trying to focus her eyes on Vincent's face. Trying to concentrate on something other than the images shooting into her mind. The man he is working with, Thomas Dunn... She silenced the sounds she wanted to make, and turned her face towards the sky. Her breaths were shaking and then-- Miss Kitai, you are living proof of Dunn's crimes... It's also the only place we'll be able to make Thomas answer for his crimes.
Thomas Dunn.
She saw a toothy smile, and felt pain all over her scalp as if it was being ripped from her head. She reached up to protect herself, and felt smooth and slick - no hair. Bald, and the slick? She held her hands to her face and saw blood. But she didn't have blood. It wasn't real. It wasn't real. It wasn't--
Thomas Dunn was not in the boat with them, and Tehodis' hair was slick with seawater - not blood. But Thomas Dunn was there. He was in Tehodis' mind, and she couldn't stop thinking about him, protecting him, serving him. She could feel anger in her mind, telling her that Vincent Laeretti was a threat to Tom. Telling her that Kikuriku Gouken was a threat to Tom. Telling her that she was a threat to Tom. She would kill them, and then herself. Destroy the boat. Leave them all to drown. Slice one of them, and use their blood to summon the sharks or--
"N-no, no. We need to..."Take care of them, Blue."I promised Kiku that we would follow up on clues. About his mother. She was last seen in Aissic - so we need to stay there, and we need to do that, and then -- then we can go. I... Vincent, he had no reason to help us. And--" She turned to look at Kiku, his face, the fact that he was even alive made her feel better. But not enough... Because some part of her wanted her to throw him back into the water and let him freeze to death. It wasn't the same part of her that wanted to kiss him again - she didn't think so, anyways.
"I didn't even know him, Vincent. Before the ship. I know I told you I did, but... I didn't. He didn't. We didn't. And he was going to martyr himself so that we could escape back there. We-- I owe him. So we'll--" Go to Aissic. Find Woodrow. Turn yourself in. Kill them. Find the Master. "We need to go to Asmin. Right, Kiku?"

Kikuriku struggled for a moment. The blanket was doing an amazing job of keeping his important bits free from the adverse effects that the cold often brings, but he was extremely uncomfortable. He was mostly dry by this point, and even covered by the warm blanket, he was quite aware of his nakedness and he lacked the energy to shapeshift himself into something less… naked.
It was difficult to stay focused on the matter at hand. In one corner, Vincent wanted to get to Artavia in order to help Tehodis get whatever was wrong with her fixed. In the other corner, Tehodis wanted to stay in Aissic and help Kiku find his mother. For years, that had been his goal – to find her and whoever had taken her and make them answer for his (or her) crimes. Tehodis had found a clue – a possible clue, anyway – and who knows how long it would still be warm for? Who even knew if it was still a viable option? Still, Violet’s long shot had paid dividends so far, so perhaps Tehodis’ idea would garner some traction as well. At the very least, it was worth a shot.
That is, Kiku wanted to take a shot at it. But deep down, he knew what the right thing to do was.
“Tehodis,” Kiku began, reaching out with his hand to grab hers. She was always so light and airy, but even her hands felt icy to the touch. “I am so, so so thankful that you are thinking of me, and you know I’m looking forward to this investigation but… Vincent is right. Getting you better, figuring out whatever it is that Thomas Dunn has done, and exactly how Woodrow is involved should be our number one priority. Besides, patrolling around Aissic isn’t exactly going to be easy with Woodrow wanting our hea… well, Vincent’s head on a stick. I’m just realizing now that he has no idea who I am.” Kiku turned to Vincent, whispering, “Perhaps we can use that later?”
“The point is, Tehodis…” Kiku met her gaze with a lighthearted smile. After all they’d been through on the Eastwind, it felt like they’d been together a hundred years – yet still he could look at her as if it was the first time. Even as downtrodden as she looked in the moment, she was the most beautiful thing he’d ever laid eyes on. Kiku knew he had to help fix whatever had been tampered with. “We should head to Artavia. My mother can wait.”

Vincent was... both surprised and unsurprised at the revelation that Tehodis and Kikuriku were not, in fact, prior acquaintances. If he were in any other state, perhaps he would have actually been a bit angry about it; Tehodis had lied to him, for the purpose of keeping Kiku safe despite the fact that he was a stowaway. Vincent had taught her already that the law did not make exceptions for friends, and this man hadn't even been that.
But, alas, Vincent was in no mood or state to care at the moment. And even if he was, what could he do about it now? He had no authority to enforce the law while the three of them were in a life boat in the middle of the Aiss sea, and especially not now that he was a fugitive. And also especially when the man in charge of the law was corrupt.
Besides that, Tehodis was correct; he had helped them despite clearly having no reason to. Without his aid, Vincent wasn't so sure he and Tehodis would both have escaped the Eastwind at all. Without his help, Thomas Dunn's crime on Tehodis would not have been exposed. He had broken a law, but he had committed several major acts of good afterward. Vincent was not typically one to compromise on moral standing - one needed to pay due sentence for a crime committed - but... if he were in a position to enforce the law at the moment, he might be willing to suppose that Kikuriku's noble acts following his petty crime certainly accounted for what was due of him. It's not like he was some criminal dreg dragging down society, at the very least.
And he was also siding with Vincent.
Tehodis seemed to insist on the idea that they should stay in Aissic, that she had promised to help Kikuriku track down a missing mother. The topic was... something Vincent could relate to, certainly. But now would not be the best time for it. They would need to leave Aissic as quickly as possible once they arrived. And Kiku was the first to say so, pointing out before Vincent could that Woodrow's men would be all over the place. He said his mother could wait.
Was there no end to how much he was willing to put them before himself? If Vincent were in his position... presented with the possibility of finding a lost family member he had thought long gone? He wasn't certain that even his own sense of self control would be enough to hold him back from wanting to pursue that. But here Kiku was, putting Tehodis first. Vincent had spent so many years under Lord Woodrow, with his selfish pursuits and his tendency to stand on pride and status, that perhaps Vincent had grown desensitized to which actions truly defined a good man. Kikuriku was certainly that.
"I agree," he said, following Kiku's statement and fixing Tehodis with a stern look. "Trust me when I say I know how important it must be, to find a lost member of one's family. But we would only be endangering ourselves further by lingering in Aissic. In Artavia, I can get you help, Miss Kitai. Furthermore, Artavia is the only place where what has been done to your mind will be recognized formally as a triable crime. There are also no SSPB offices there; the country is outside of that jurisdiction. It is the best place for us to be, for now."
As he spoke, he noticed something in Tehodis; a strange sort of defiance, a tug and pull she seemed to be resisting. It was the same sort of tug-of-war he'd seen earlier on the ship, as well. She was clearly struggling to accept his and Kiku's words, and Vincent got the impression that a part of her wanted to be in Aissic just so that Woodrow would find them.
This was going to be problematic if they could not find a solution. That blasted scoundrel... He spoke so slowly, so deliberately, specifically trying to avoid breaking the order on Tehodis. He knew exactly what he'd been doing, must have known what Tom had been doing. And because he never finished his sentence, Tehodis was stuck like this.
He blinked, as an idea formed, glancing over at Kikuriku. He had mentioned the possibility of using the fact that Woodrow didn't know who he was. He knew the man's face, but not that he was an Ajatar. And an Ajatar could have many faces. Including...
"Kikuriku. Might you have the strength to change your form? I believe I may have a temporary solution to Miss Kitai's troubles."
Post by Kikuriku Gouken on Mar 15, 2017 10:44:48 GMT -7
For a moment, Kikuriku thought he saw a look of respect on Vincent’s face. Respect for Kiku. But, as quickly as it had appeared, it vanished – almost as if he was hiding it. Or maybe, Vincent was just that weird of a guy. Whatever it was, Kiku took it as a compliment – siding with Vincent was the right call here, regardless of whether or not Tehodis was going to be happy about.
Tehodis, who seemed distracted by something. The entire time she spoke, it seemed as if something was nagging her at the back of her mind, though Kiku could not read what it was. He could feel it, though. Ever since he heard Thomas Dunn command her, something had been eating away at her, and she couldn’t gain control even now. Even being away from Thomas. Even being away from Woodrow.
Almost as if their thoughts were connected, Vincent spoke up, asking if Kikuriku had the energy to change his form. If Tehodis was forced to obey Woodrow’s commands, and do whatever it is that he said, then perhaps it didn’t have to be Woodrow exactly. Maybe just a man who looked, sounded and spoke just like him – only slightly better looking. Kikuriku shot Vincent a look. They were on the same page.
Kiku staggered to his feet, still covered by the blanket. Standing was hard, shifting would be even harder. He closed his eyes and pictured the face of the man who he’d come to loathe. His strong jaw, his regal aura, his obnoxious gravitas – they could all be duplicated. With the image clearly in his mind, he prepared for the change and fully covered himself with the blanket. He didn’t want Tehodis to actually see him shift. It was not a pretty sight, and if she saw it, it could destroy the illusion for her. She has to believe that Kikuriku is Markus Woodrow.
He dropped the blanket, and mustered all of his energy to stand tall in the boat. There stood the body of the Aasimar dirtbag, Markus Woodrow, with his steely blue-green eyes, brown hair and overall suckiness.
Post by Tehodis Kitai on Mar 21, 2017 7:52:00 GMT -7
Tehodis couldn't believe this. How could Kiku disagree? How could he not want to find his mother -- wasn't that the reason he had helped them? At his refusal, she could feel herself warm, the confirmation that no, it was only part of the reason, making her feel a happiness she couldn't relate to much else in her life. But then the discussion shifted once more, and she felt herself pulled to disappointment again. There was that side of her that wanted to go to Aissic - not for Kiku, not for herself... For him. To get captured, and go back to where she's supposed to be. Wherever that was - she couldn't be sure. But it wasn't here. Wasn't with Vincent, or with Kiku.
With Thomas Dunn.
She had to think of another way to achieve that goal, and if Kiku wasn't the solution then perhaps, she thought, Vincent might be. Vincent, and Endless. She thought as quickly as she could about how she could frame it, the best way to convince Vincent, and she was so devoted to her thinking that she wasn't paying attention to the conversation (or action) going on around her. "Vincent," She finally said, easily ignoring Kiku under the blanket with the driven focus provided by the mind control, "I... Speaking about family. Endless--"
The blanket dropped.
Her breath caught in her throat and she averted her eyes at the sight. It was Lord Markus Woodrow. "L-lord Woodrow," She managed, keeping her eye on the horizon and not on the-- on Woodrow. Her right mind knew that this was certainly not Lord Woodrow. But another part of her was so thoroughly convinced. A part of her that wasn't thoroughly disgusted. And that disgusted her.

Kikuriku seemed to have gotten the idea. His response to Vincent's question was simply to nod and immediately set to work, him and Vincent evidently being on the same page. He concealed himself from Tehodis's sight, most likely not to break the illusion for her if she noticed what was happening, and Vincent could see as the shape beneath the blanket began to change size.
Tehodis was barely paying it any attention, her behavior starting to sink back into that almost distant, distracted mode he had observed earlier, the behavior that he now knew must have indicated she was warring with Tom's orders inside her. Well, with any luck, that wouldn't be a problem any longer in a moment.
But then she said something that made Vincent's heart stop.
"I... Speaking about family. Endless--"
What? What?
Endless. That was his younger brother's name. A very unusual name for a person to bear, one that in all likelihood belonged to no other. And Tehodis had said that name after mentioning family to Vincent. Vincent had never told her the names of his family members, either. He'd never elaborated on the subject at all. What? What in the absolute bloody hell???
His breathing quickened. Four simple words and his mind was reeling. Four simple words and he was suddenly feeling something almost akin to panic, desperation; he needed to know what Tehodis had been about to tell him. He needed her to tell him right this moment. He needed... he needed...
He needed to quell that desperate voice inside of him that was willing to clutch at the tiniest lead, and set his priorities straight. Tehodis had stopped talking because Kikuriku had finished his transformation. He stood before them now as Markus Woodrow himself. Tehodis was captured by the sight of him. Vincent, of course, could notice a few discrepancies, the details not exactly perfect. But it was certainly convincing enough to someone who wasn't closely scrutinizing, and based on what Tehodis had told him before, he doubted she had actually had a great desire to commit many of Woodrow's close personal details to memory. Vincent noticed that he was wearing clothes now as well; a quick glance at the blanket, and how it seemed to have shrunk, told him where Kikuriku must have gotten the material from.
This was the current priority.
With his transformation complete, Kikuriku would be capable of doing what Woodrow himself had not; he'd be able to give Tehodis the order that would free herself from her own mental prison. He'd be able to put her in the right frame of mind. Then, THEN Vincent could ask her the question that was now practically trying to tear itself from his throat.
He gripped his knees with white knuckles and gave Kiku a quick nod, barely holding in his own impatience. "Lord Woodrow," he said, so as to maintain the fantasy. "If you would please. I believe you had something to say to Miss Kitai earlier."

[attr="class","mwoody"]
[attr="class","mwoody2"]
[attr="class","mwoody3"]A PREDATOR OF THE SEAS
[attr="class","mwoody4"]CURING THIS OCEAN DISEASE
[attr="class","mwoody5"]Tom's revelations would have left Markus stunned if not for the way that adrenaline had taken over his body. Instead the words hit a thick wall in his mind, and then clutched and climbed and tried to seep into every pore they could find. He had been lied to (that had already been clear), but now the truth was coming out. If it was really the truth. Tom had experimented on Tehodis? Tom had... Done that to Tehodis? Tom was the reason- He was the reason...
Tehodis had gone missing so many years ago. Imperator Cowell had been looking for her ever since, but it was Woodrow who had found her. He had discovered who she was, and kept her as an advantage in negotiations with Cowell. Negotiations that had never been. She didn't remember any of her life involving the Malscuri commander-in-chief. This was the reason? Doctor Thomas Dunn? It didn't make sense, but damn it made sense.
It was ruining him, and Markus couldn't parse his feelings. Did he want Tehodis Kitai, or did he want the fantasy Tom had created? He had been so tempted by Tehodis' obedient behavior in his chambers, but it had been strange to him. It wasn't like Tehodis, not the one he knew... But was that Tehodis who she was? Or another creation of Tom's? Woodrow's mind raced and his eyes bulged, and he pressed once more into Tom solely because it felt good to hurt him. This time, his arm moved to the man's neck, cutting off his airways. The act made Woodrow feel powerful again. In control.
"You're a fucking monster," He decided, his eyes finally rising once more to meet Tom's. There was no world in which Markus Woodrow was going to release Thomas Dunn. No future where Tom would have a chance to prove his villainy again, no way he was going to be put in the situation Vincent and his posse had locked him into moments before. "Do you understand that, Dunn? You're a twisted, evil little man."
Gods in the Motherland, what had he done? He had chosen to defend Tom to Vincent out of… What? The idea of capturing the pirates? The feeling of Tehodis being guaranteed to him? Pure power? What had become of him? Why did his insults to Tom feel like lies? How could he regain control before everything was lost? Woodrow thought, and thought, not giving care to how long his arm crushed into Tom's windpipe. He needed time. He needed to sort things. He--
He had defied the points of his own contract. Tom had granted the SSPB exclusive use of his technology. This defied that use. Woodrow need not suffer the other facets of the contract, Tom's immunity. He could arrest Dunn, and he could execute him. And oh, he would. But not yet. No… He has a purpose, His mind supplied, Use him.
In due time, it would be Woodrow’s hand on the lever as Tom hung before the SSPB.
Post by Thomas Dunn on Sept 25, 2017 18:27:31 GMT -7
Evidently, Tom had been wrong about Woodrow.
He thought the man was righteous only in the public face, that he cared too deeply for himself and his reputation to truly take a stance against Tom. That was why the good Lord had accepted Tom's help, wasn't it? Or maybe, Tom had been wrong about Woodrow's feelings for Blue. It was possible his interest wasn't shallow and self-centered the way Tom had assumed, and that he actually had deep emotions for her. Cared for her well-being above her interaction with himself. Tom would have been shocked, honestly. He had felt an instant kinship with Woodrow that told him his feelings were only, and always superficial.
Or maybe, just maybe, there was something else going on here. He hadn't seen Skull after he had assigned her to kill Vincent. Could she have failed? Vincent didn't seem like much of a physical threat, and Skull would have the element of surprise. Still, he had to entertain the possibility that Vincent was still alive, and that he could have poisoned Woodrow's ear against him. He willed for her to appear then, to have her put a knife to Woodrow's throat and give Tom an opportunity to save the situation. But she could not read his mind or hear his silent wills. She could only learn his silent intent like a child learning how to appease a demanding father. No, Tom was alone, and he would need to solve this problem himself.
"My lord, you have to understand I had no choice in the matter," Tom struggled to speak, Woodrow's heavy arm beginning to stop his breathing. He knew the only thing that could possibly save him now. Give Woodrow a bigger corruption to solve. Make himself look weak. Small fish. Appeal to Woodrow's intense ego. "The Artavian government--" He cut himself off this time, not because of his lack of air, but to allow Woodrow to finish the thought himself. He maintained his struggle, acting the weak man that Woodrow now saw him as.

Kikuriku – no, Markus Woodrow - stood tall in the small boat, his new clothes providing some shelter from the bitter cold winds that assaulted him. He glanced knowingly in Vincent’s direction; hopefully this had been a good enough imitation of the scumbag that he’d only seen a few times. Vincent’s gaze seemed to be dismissive, but not disgusted – Kiku would take that as a win.
“Tehodis. My darling Tehodis…” Kikuriku began, using his best imitation of Woodrow’s admittedly silky yet commanding voice. It disgusted him that he was standing in the guise of a man who was more than likely party to countless atrocities to the Beastfolk people. To Na’il.
But what’s important now is freeing Tehodis from this spell.
And then a thought occurred to him. Kiku was in complete control of this woman. This woman whom he’d felt an intense attraction to – a longing – and whom he had kissed just earlier in the evening. It wouldn’t be a far stretch to assume that this mind control power had the potential to make her completely devoted to him! Allowing him to have many wives, to eat and drink his fill of whatever he pleased! But that would be playing the game on easy, and Kiku didn’t like easy. He liked Tehodis.
The real Tehodis.
“I want you to do whatever it is that you want. Be free from my control. Do whatever it is that your heart desires for the rest of your life.” He brought his hand to her cheek, touching it softly. Her face felt differently than he’d imagined, almost as if he were touching nothing at all. Kiku held back a grimace as he realized that it wasn’t his hand on Tehodis, though. He couldn't wait to be back to his regular form, sailing towards his next adventure with the two best friends that anybody could have.
