Finally, finally Father said that they could eat. That she could eat. "Mm, thank you!" She raised her fork again, pausing almost imperceptibly just before it reached her mouth as though anticipating another interruption, but none came this time and she ate her food gratefully. She thought about her siblings as she ate, wondering what they were all like. Father spoke of them of course, but it had been a very long time since even he had seen them that she wondered how they might have grown and changed. She herself couldn't remember them at all. She hoped they were nice, like Father, and that they would all get along. She wondered if they would like chess. Maybe she could play chess with Black, when he came. She could never win against Father, but maybe against Black she could.

Following the meal, as Green cleared the dishes, Tom considered what else he needed to accomplish before he left. He had packed his bags, he had extracted the materials he needed. He even had his ants prepared for transport.
Really, all that was left was to make sure that Green was stable. He was going away for a long time, and he could think of no greater loss than losing her. She was his most important subject... Until he found Black, of course.
"I have some spare time this evening, Green. Would you like to choose an activity for us to do together?" He would of course guide her to a better activity if she chose something dull, but he suspected she would choose something he enjoyed. She always did.

Before she knew it, all of Green's food was in her stomach. She felt much better than before the meal, as it turned out she had been hungrier than she thought. When Father was done as well she cleared up the dishes as she always did, washing them with ease while Father sat at the table in thought. While she was drying them, he spoke up and said he had some spare time this evening. Before he even continued, her heart soared at what she hoped would come next, and she was not disappointed. Father had some free time and he wanted her to choose an activity for them to do together! She smiled excitedly down at the dish she was drying. "I would love to! Thank you Father."
She knew he was going away on business soon, so this was the last thing they would do together before he left. She had to make it good, something that would really make up for not seeing him for so long. Chess was out, because while she loved chess it wasn't special enough. Reading was out. She loved that too, but it was something she could do alone. Oh, and it had to be something he would like as well. She thought of something and brightened, but hoped that Father would be ok with the suggestion. She didn't think she had ever asked him for this before. "Could you, perhaps, take me for a ride in your aeroplane?" The question was tentative, as she wasn't sure how he would react to it. She knew he had one, but she had never even seen it let alone ridden in it. She wanted to see what it was like. And she wanted to see the stars. She could name them all, and the constellations too, as she had once read a book about them, but she rarely got to see them because she rarely left home, except for errands of course.

Her suggestion didn't disappoint him. It was a new one, and an excellent one. Not only did he love to fly his plane, but the idea of Green knowing to share that was an excellent sign for her ability to read those around her. Good. It was a skill she would need when he began to use her for more important tasks than housework.
"I'm very impressed Green," He said after a moment's thought to make her uncomfortable, "That's an extremely thoughtful choice." His face broke into a smile - a real, genuine smile, and he stood up. "There's nothing I would enjoy more." He was pretty sure it was actually true. He actually loved the idea.
"You'll want to put your hair up, and wear something warm. When you're ready I'll meet you in the lobby," Before he left the room he stepped into Green's space and put his hands on either side of her face, "You're becoming cleverer every day, Green. Perhaps I'll need to teach you how to fly the plane yourself, if you like it." He kissed her forehead in a fatherly fashion, and wondered briefly if Black's presence would change his Green.

Green bit her lip and held her breath while she watched Father's reaction. The time it took for him to respond wasn't very long, but it was certainly long enough for her to worry that her suggestion had been a terrible one and that he was going to reprimand her for choosing such a poor activity for their last one before he left. But then, he didn't. In fact, he did the opposite. She let out her breath with relief and surprised joy when he said he was impressed - something she always strived to hear from him - and when he smiled and said there was nothing he would enjoy more, she could have died happy.
She didn't die of course, but her happiness was practically palpable, though she tried to school her excitement to acceptable levels so as to not embarrass herself in front of Father. She nodded to his suggestions of putting her hair up and wearing something warm. Very smart, very smart. She might not have thought of that in her excitement, and wouldn't that be a chilly surprise when they got into the air. She thought that would be the end of it, as he said he would meet her in the lobby when she was ready, but then he came over and held her head in his hands. Her eyelids fluttered involuntarily at the contact, and if she thought she could have died happy a moment ago this was something else entirely. He said she was getting cleverer each day, and that if she liked the plane he may even teach her to fly it. He kissed her forehead then and she never wanted this perfect, absolutely perfect moment to end. She had made Father not only happy, but impressed, and perhaps even proud. She did this. She was a good daughter. She was good. She couldn't remember ever feeling as happy as she did right this moment.
He pulled back and she realized her heart was beating quick as a bird; so much excitement in such a short amount of time would do that. She smiled and nodded and said, "Thank you Father, thank you so very much. I'm sure I will love the plane! Shall I go get ready now?" When he said that she could go, she smiled again, she couldn't stop smiling, and did a quick curtsey before heading back to her room as quick as she could. Walk walk walk, no running, she thought to herself, never run, but she walked as quickly as she was able and it took no time at all for her to prepare herself once she got to her room. She didn't have an unnecessarily large collection of clothing so it was easy to find a sweater and jacket, and her nylons and thick skirt would keep her legs warm for sure though she put on her boots as opposed to her simple walking shoes. She tied her hair up in a bun and then twirled in front of the mirror, making sure she was all done up properly. Perfect.
She walked walked walked quickly then back to the lobby to meet Father. She was thrilled! She couldn't wait to ride in the aeroplane.

Tom had gone directly to his plane. He hadn't flown it for anything but visits to the furthest cities in a while, and he wasn't sure it would be up to snuff for the kind of excitement he wanted to show Green. His worries were mostly unfounded however, as he only needed to add a few squirts of oil to some of the squeakiest gears before it was ready. Still, it dirtied his hands. Perhaps, to ensure Green didn't begin to think too highly of herself, he would ask her to wipe them with her skirt. She could always watch it later, but it was something no one would normally offer.
He headed back to the lobby, where Green looked as though she had been waiting for at least a minute or two. Good, he thought. "Had to make sure it was top notch for you, Green." He showed her his hands, evidence of his work, "I don't want to dirty the plane. Might I?" He motioned to her skirt. If she refused, he might have a project tonight, fixing her before he left.

Green stood perfectly still while waiting for Father to arrive, though inside her head she was bouncing around with excitement. She was patient. She knew that Father would be here when he was ready, and if he wasn't here yet it was because he was attending to something important. After all, this plane right was going to be her first, so she was sure he was making sure it would be absolutely perfect. He was very thoughtful.
When he walked in she found that her suspicion was correct, as he said he had to make sure everything was top notch with the plane. He truly was the best father in the world. She noticed his dirty hands as he raised them to show her and she was touched that he had gotten his hands dirty to ensure the plane was ready for their flight. He motioned to her skirt and she looked down, then back at his hands and said "Oh! Of course, I'm so sorry, I should have offered!" She put a hand out to take one of his, at his permission, and lifted the front of her skirt a bit to use the underside to gently but throughly wipe the dirt from his hands. The underside of the skirt was least likely to get anything on the plane dirty, and she certainly didn't want to dirty the plane, though of course it might rub the dirt and oil against her nylons but that was what washing them was for, wasn't it? And if she couldn't get the oil out of her clothes, she knew Father would have a solution. He was brilliant, so he probably knew lots of different soaps that might work, but he was also very caring, and he may just buy her a new skirt if she was very good. "All clean," she announced when she finished, releasing his hand perhaps a little reluctantly but flashing him a smile.

Good. Everything was working just as intended. "Good girl, Green," He smiled as she cleaned his hands. There was a sink not far away, he could have simply washed them -- but this was more important. Testing her. Feeling the power he held over her. He hoped one day to hold this power over more people. An army of them, perhaps. Once he had all of his Acacias, perhaps he could do just that.
"Come, Green," He offered as she finished, and lead her out of the lab - which he thoroughly locked behind him - and down to the plane which was sitting on the runway. He pulled the aviator cap and goggles from the passenger seat and beckoned Green over. He placed in carefully on her head, making sure her hair wasn't pressed uncomfortably within the thing, and then placed the goggles over her eyes. "You always need to make sure to wear goggles in the plane, Green. You won't be able to see anything otherwise, alright?" He then offered his hand to her to aid her in boarding the plane, and buckling her belt over her chest to ensure it was done properly. She might be able to cook a meal, but he was far too concerned with losing his property to leave her to buckle her seatbelt on her own.
He placed his own cap and goggles on and got into the cockpit, doing up his own belt with a quick snap. "Tell me, Green... Do you want to go somewhere, or do you just want to fly as the birds do?"

She was glad he was happy with her. Making him happy with her and showing that she was a good daughter were worth far more to her than a dirty skirt. She went with him out to where the plane was sitting, and stood obediently as he put the cap and goggles on her head. The cap would certainly keep her ears from getting cold, which was good because she hadn't thought to put on a hat. Father was so considerate as he put the cap on, making sure her hair wasn't in the way. He told her she always needed to wear goggles in the plane and she nodded. "Yes Father," she responded, making sure she would never forget such an important thing. Goggles goggles goggles. Always wear goggles.
The plane was a little awkward to get into, but Father helped her in and then buckled the safety belt securely. This truly was the greatest activity she could have suggested, she thought. When he was finished so kindly helping her, he got his own cap and goggles and then got into the front seat with all the buttons and knobs and the steering wheel, which was not like a regular steering wheel but she could recognize its purpose anyway. Father asked her if she wanted to go somewhere or if she wanted to fly as the birds do, and she chuckled. "I want to fly as you do, Father. This plane can surely fly more beautifully even than a bird, with you at the wheel."

Oh, he had definitely programmed her quite well. Her compliment went directly to his head and he grinned. She was far better than his child could have ever been. Far more obedient than any servant he could hire. He was a genius for having made her this way.
"Good girl," He told her again as he started the thing, and began hitting a variety of knobs and buttons. He ensured he made it look extra difficult, somewhat to intimidate, somewhat to amaze. The propeller blared to life and he knew the sound would be quite loud for her, having been far more used to the quiet sanctity of the hospital. "You ready?" He called back, not waiting for an answer, just simply having her think he cared enough to ask. He began turning the thing around, facing it the proper way down the makeshift runway that had taken him almost a year to complete. He set his sights on the track, and began to accelerate.
He assumed it must have been a scary situation for her. He was speeding towards the fences after all, and if the plane didn't take off they would certainly crash into a bloody and fiery mess - but he would never risk himself that way. He pulled off the ground comfortably, taking to the sky and sailing up, up, up, until the hospital, and the mutant field was far below them. The stars looked brighter up here, and you could even see some of the cities in the distance. He would sail gently for a bit, allowing her to get used to the new sensations... But soon, he would begin to show her what he could really do with the aeroplane.
"What do you think?" He called out to her, yelling over the loudness of the plane.
