The panthro had seen her, two pairs of periwinkle eyes locked; did she know what Red had heard?
The panthro could be forgiven for her past actions, that much was true enough, but she planned to kill this Ser Godfrey person, and the girl knew that she could not permit that to happen. Invriah forgave, Invriah believed that a new stone could be overturned and penance paid, old crimes forgotten; but that did not mean that her servant could stand by and allow a murder.
These thoughts plagued the girl, eyes wide with helpless confusion, but louder still was the whisper in the back of her mind, the one that told her that if she warned the Vanros man of Ekahi’s trickery, he would trust her. Confide in her.
Pearl teeth caught her bottom lip, conflict swirling through the sky of her eyes. She didn’t want the panthro to be hurt, but she knew what Papa would want her to do...
And when had Papa ever lead her astray?
- good bit of cloak and dagger intrigue and gossip. That was what the Shroud was for –
The ruby-tressed girl caught enough of the meaning behind that shadowy word – the Shroud – to understand what it was, the people who had sent her.
Red drew in a deep breath, lungs aching with unexpected strain, and dashed in front of Edgar’s retreating form, eyes wide in the betrayal of childlike fear, the innocent way it overtakes the whole of a rounded face, mouth dipped in a panicked ‘o’.
She held his attention completely – she must, having bolted in front of him only to catch a swift stop, hands outstretched to pause his progress, eyes appealingly pinned to his.
“Lord Vanros!” She squeaked, just to be sure it was him, “She – she’s not here to send him a message.”
The girl stood on the very tips of her toes, voice dipping to an ominous hush, low enough his ears were the only touched by her warning:

Ekahi kept her wide eyes and brimming smile on the man’s golden mask. The crowd around them was getting louder and louder with each tense heartbeat in the cub’s chest, but the one in front of her was the only stuck up noble at that masquerade who still mattered to Ekahi at the moment. He was her key to getting away from all the attention and finishing the contract, and though the panthro held her breath as the man studied her, Ekahi’s ears immediately perked up when the noble turned around and gestured for the cub to follow. Her plan was working! The assassin cupped her hands behind her back and half-walked, half-skipped after the noble, but not before tilting her head back. Now that she thought about it, there was one more noble who mattered. The panthro’s pale blue eyes scanned the crowd until they spotted the lady she had pushed past earlier, the one who had shrieked and started all the commotion in the first place. The woman was furiously fanning away at her face, sweat lining the edge of her fur shawl as if near fainting, and with a thin scowl on her ugly red lips as she stared at Ekahi.
Lips which paled against her face when the cub stuck her tongue out back.
Smirking and now satisfied, the panthro returned her attention to the noble just as he began to speak again. So, Ser Godfrey was at the masquerade! It would be silly for the Shroud to send her otherwise, of course, but they were pretty mad about the door, so it was nice to hear at least.
“Oh, I’ll be very quick, mister! Your guests won’t even know I’m here!”
That was kind of a big part of her job!
“And as much as I appreciate the offer, I’m afraid I can’t tell you the message. It’s for Ser Godfrey and Ser Godfrey alone, they said. I’m sure you could ask him about it, though!”
Ekahi purred. He could certainly ask…not that Ser Godfrey would have much to say with her bolt lodged in his throat. They rarely do! And all it would take it seemed was a bit more work on the man to get him to trust her, and then everything else would fall into place for the assassin.
At least until she ran up.
The panthro opened her mouth to explain how she arrived when a flash of scarlet flew past the corner of her eye, and before she could so much as blink Ekahi saw the girl she had spotted earlier waving her hands toward the masked man in a panic. It was a bit funny looking, but the assassin’s smile by then had already faltered, even as the girl leaned in and whispered something incoherent into the man’s ear. Ekahi had heard enough to puzzle her.
She was not there to send him a message?
The cub remained standing behind the noble’s back, but she glared at the girl and twitched an ear in frustration. First off, that was the whole point of why she was there! To send a message! A message in blood, sure, but the contract was all about sending messages for her clients. And second, how…how could she have known? For a second the panthro thought of slinking away into the crowd and taking her chances with finding Ser Godfrey alone, but doing so would have no doubt given her away immediately. Plus, as strange as this girl was, who would take her seriously? She was like…eight, or something. So, Ekahi waited for the noble. Though even as she stood there the cub’s hand innocently drifted to her side and over the dagger she had hidden, and her eyes mapped out the quickest escape route from where she stood. If, by some miracle, the girl did reveal the assassin’s identity, then she would be prepared.
And maybe a few dead guards would be enough to take the pep out of the brat’s step.
Edgar Vanros and Scarlet Dunnx 676 x Sheesh...no kidding! x3 Also sorry if this sounds a little rushed, I'm still trying to work out Ekahi's voice for her posts!

Another girl had called out the panthro as an assassin, here to kill Godfrey. Rather than run, the beast stayed behind him. If what the girl had said was true, then this assassin had excellent timing. After Godfrey's threat, it was almost tempting to let him die. But that wouldn't be good for Edgar's image, not at all. Even if he wanted Godfrey dead, now was the absolute worst time to let that happen.
Edgar muttered a single word under his breath, just low enough for the panthro to hear him, all the while keeping his back to her. "Run."
Of course, putting on a mask was exactly what these dances were all about. Spinning on his heels, he pointed at the beast. "Guards! Arrest this mongrel!"
If this girl was truly an assassin - perhaps that was how she had found her way in - then she could just as easily get herself out. The trouble would be finding her again, but if she was truly dedicated to her job, then she would make sure to finish it. He winked at the panthro, giving what few tells he could allow that he was on her side. He pulled in his hands, pretending to wipe them from having touched the panthro's, and barked towards the guards that now begin to circle around the beast with their rapiers. "Don't let her escape!"
As he began to run away in the most dignified manner he could muster, it was up to the panthro to decide how she would make her escape. He could only hope she would not let him down.
