he insisted that yes, she would indeed be coming with them - for they were a team - and he smiled once more before kicking out to knock the sails loose. In a moment the wood securing them shifted, and down they came with a wooden clunk, the sails catching the wind and filling out with ease. For now they were heading with the wind, which made it all the easier, and faster to sail. And while many would steer the catamaran with two (and he supposed now he had a friend), Halu and his ancestors were built in the way of a barge, with arms long and strong enough to control it alone.
"May I ask Aumakua," Halu started, his voice projecting well over the wind and waves that filled the air now that they were moving, "Have you guided many others before me? How-- how much of the world have you seen?"

Sailing was fun! It was a rather slow way to travel, at least when you were capable of traversing the water with the speed that Cari was, but it was fun! The feeling of the wind rushing against her skin and hair sent chills throughout her body. Little speckles of water flew off her figure at the wind’s behest.
Halulahi’s voice boomed out from behind her so loudly that it startled her from her sweet reverie. His voice fit his frame, unlike his kind heart. He asked if she’d ever guided anyone else before, and how much of the world that she had seen. A curious question, to be sure, because it was Halulahi that was guiding Cari – she didn’t know where they were going - she was just happy to be a part of the team. As for how much she had seen – that was a tricky question.
Cari swayed over towards Halulahi, standing behind him. She jumped up, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders, and swung her legs to plant against his hips. Pushing off, she climbed up his unaffected frame until she sat comfortably upon his shoulders. She had thought earlier that she wanted to do this, and now, it was the perfect time! The wind in her hair plus her new height made her feel much like a giant. Cari smiled a great big smile, and let out a laugh.
“Well, Hah-lu-lah-hee,” the words danced again, twirling in the wind as they left her lips, “I’ve seen a lot, I think. And there is probably a lot left for me to see. At least, I hope that there is, or else, what is the point of everything? There’s always something new to see – something new to learn. But no one knows the waters better than me!” She let out another laugh – more a giggle. She’d never been able to brag about her love for water before, and to do so felt a little funny. She knew everything about water – so much so that it more a part of her than it was any other mortal under the stars. Cari and the water had a bond that could never be broken. “As for guiding people,” Cari said, placing both hands on Halulahi’s head, flattening his hair, “I’ve never shown myself to anybody else before.”
is Aumakua was so strange compared to what he had thought it would be. She was playful, lively, like a babbling brook almost - and as she climbed up onto his shoulders he couldn't help but laugh. It was the tickling of her hands against his skin - like bringing your hands to your face when cupping cold water - and the way that she giggled like a bubble bursting at the surface of a pail. She was the water, just as Wyghal's emissaries should be - and yet she was something else, too.
As she told him that she had never shown herself to anyone before, he felt a surge of pride. He felt chosen. He felt purpose. For so long he had been told that he had to become chief, for his entire life he had been trained to conquer the Uhane Holo - and never before had he felt that it was his destiny. No, he was not as wise as Kapueo. He was not in touch with Wyghal like Kailani was. He was not a leader like many of the other children had shown themselves to be. In this moment, with Aumakua Cari on his shoulders, guiding him to the Puhi Lanahu -- he felt as though his destiny may have been showing itself.
"I... I thank you for the great bestowments of honour you have granted me, Aumakua Cari," He spoke as they sailed ever west, his arms relaxing as they merely held position with the waves, not needing to fight them quite yet, "I am blessed by you, and by Wyghal. I will do all in my power not to disappoint but--" A slight moment of concern enveloped him. The feeling he had been consumed with when Kapueo had not responded to his affections. A feeling of utter mediocrity, unimportance. "Why me?"

Halulahi was a big, scary man – but to Cari he already seemed as if he was much more frightened and timid than he let on. He sailed the seas with the confidence of a brave man, but his questioning her choosing him seemed to be something a shyer man might do. Someone who didn’t believe in their own worth. Cari would certainly have no part in entertaining that!
“Why you?” Cari repeated. Halulahi was so kind and sweet and gentle that the thought of him doubting himself almost made Cari sad. It certainly made her want to make him smile again, like when he was dancing! But she couldn’t understand his sadness – or his uncertainty. Why did it matter why she was here? She was here, with him. Knowing why wouldn’t change that. Knowing that she’d spent an almost immeasurable amount of time struggling to decide whether or not to reveal herself to anyone at all would sound silly. Cari didn’t want to sound silly in front of her new friend.
“Why not? Are you not a nice person? I think you’re nice. And I’m having a wonderful time! The wind is so nice!” Cari raised her hands in the air, struggling a bit to balance herself on Halulahi’s shoulders. Luckily for her, they were very strong shoulders, and she was very tiny. She let out a loud giggle, and lost herself in the thrill of the journey. She tried her absolute best to ignore her knowledge of what was in the direction that they were travelling as she just wanted to sit back an enjoy the adventure – but she couldn’t. If they continued heading this way, they would eventually reach the hot lands. She didn’t know if he knew that, or what mortals called them, but Cari called them the hot lands. It was really hot over there. “So, Hah-lu-lah-hee, can you tell me why we are going this way?”
ice. Was that what Wyghal desired in his next leader? Chief Manaoki was not what Halu would call 'nice'. She was powerful, impassable, cold. She was a woman of order, a woman with a fist like the stone of the highest mountain. Their island was safe under her command... But perhaps Wyghal was looking for something more than safety? Perhaps he wanted something Halulahi had.
Then again, Kapueo and Kailani were also nice.
"So, Hah-lu-lah-hee, can you tell me why we are going this way?"
All youths would first attend to their ancestor's tribal location. Some families had just one (all had one, even if due only to marriage), but Halu's had many. There had been Chief after Chief in his family, and so where to begin his journey was an intimidating question to answer. There was one closer to home, but further from the family in Olathbe. There were many farther from home. And then there was the Puhi Lanahu. The site of his last ancestor to be chief. The site he had heard so much about from his mother. He felt silly saying he was going there because of her, though.
"Great Chief Onomaka discovered Puhi Lanahu," He explained, still trying to understand the reason himself, "He was my tutu of many ancestors ago. It is one of the most dangerous of all on this journey and..."And? Why did he want to go? "Even if I fail in my journey, I shall bring pride to my family by conquering Puhi Lanahu."
t seemed like a good enough answer, though it may not have entirely convinced him. The truth was: A part of him was hoping he would fail. If he could not conquer the Puhi Lanahu, then it would prove he was not worthy of chieftaincy, and he would then be expected to continue in his travels under a new purpose -- the purpose of assisting those who could still be the Chosen. He did not want to fail so early, for it would bring shame to his family, but he also did not want to succeed and improve their hopes of him. Would it not be easier to disappoint them whilst their belief was minimal?
He supposed in the end, it did not yet matter. The Puhi Lanahu was a day's sail away, and he had an Aumakua with him. Perhaps, if nothing else, her position would be to instill him with the confidence of his ancestors. Perhaps there was more to himself to yet discover.
