There it is. She was indeed interested in the expedition. He had not meant for it to be such alluring bait, but it had hooked Natalia in regardless. Suddenly, her tone had shifted from one who seemed far too comfortable with routine, to speaking proudly of what she had done for the company. She was rambling, but it was a desperate bid to make herself look better. She didn't want to be good enough for this company. Nor did she want to be better. She knew exactly who she was, the kind of potential she had. Was it… validation that she longed for? At times she seemed to readily concede she longed for nothing more, yet as soon as Zota took her at her word, suddenly she wanted to overachieve.
He rested his hands on his desk, and side. "Natalia." He let her name hang on the air for a few moments. "It is alright. I don't think you're out of line. If I'm mad about anything, it's that as soon as you show exactly the sort of motivation I've been hoping for from you, you go right to beating yourself up for it. I dare say I would be a hypocrite if I was angry with you." Really, isn't this exactly what he wanted? Between needing to placate Kross after Nicole threatened Markus Woodrow, that doctor absconding with Zechariah, and Edgar just "happening" to find that painting and the help of a supposed benefactor, Zota felt…
…No. He would never think of himself that way. Natalia was offering to support him, after all. Taking a leap of faith with her, no matter how uncertain, still offered more possibilities than simply sending her on her way and moving on. "Very well. During the Coin of Fortune, we'll be conducting an expedition below the Jewel Shore in Gemarton. It is believed that there is a treasure lying beneath there, and our primary purpose is to find any such treasure." He could not have her asking too many questions, like why did this need to be kept secret? So he decided to embellish some of the details. "I do need to warn you that there may be dangers such as cave-ins or the like, and treasure can be… alluring. This is not something we wish to publicize, in the off-chance that it may attract pirates, raiders, or any who may wish to steal from our country. This is another part of why these interviews are necessary." It wasn't. "We need to screen our current employees so no one gets any… ideas, as I'm sure you could very well imagine. But, I am inviting you to join because I trust you. I apologize if withholding this until now has been misleading to you, but please understand that this is a sensitive issue."
He rose from his seat, and reached a hand across to Natalia. "So, Natalia. If you wish to help the Kross Mining Company, will you accept?"
but the flesh will have it's way. and i'm already gone. i'm gone.
[attr="class","ohlovebody"]Her heart stopped as he said her name, pausing afterwards. That single moment roiled with so much fear-- that she had overstepped the invisible line in the sand that separated the two of them, the boundary that said Zota Vanros belonged in this office, and she in the mines below. She worried over her position, worried how she would survive on the streets. There was no life for her outside of the mining company, and she had blown it with her big, fat mouth--
--But that wasn't what happened. Instead, Zota Vanros maintained that which she had defended him on for so long. Things she had thought before she'd even met the man face-to-face like this. He was kind, fatherly, he cared about her, and the other people who worked for the corporation. Zota Vanros was a good man.
"Yes-- Sir-- Yes, sir," She said too quickly to properly accommodate his rank, pushing herself off of the chair with one hand and timidly taking the one he offered with the other. They were softer than she expected.
The expedition he had told her about sounded like a new opportunity. Dangerous-- yes, she had expected that... But the reward would have to be great. This was talk of treasure. It wasn't mining for mineral resources, or digging to create a train tunnel. This was treasure. She knew she could do this. She knew she would not fail-- She wouldn't fail Zota Vanros, Kornelius Kross, and she wouldn't fail herself. Maybe things could change.

Although Natalia was still a nervous wreck in agreeing to the expedition, she accepted nonetheless. Perfect. There would still be the matter of getting Kross' approval, but that was always a matter for another day. Among the people he had promised to bring onto the expedition, there was a part of him that felt some disgust at lying to them. Not because deceit were inherently against his nature, of course. If they were to know him as a fraud, it would be because he had made them a promise he had no certain way of keeping. And after the embarrassment Nicole had brought, Kross would have half a mind to simply fire Zota - if he was lucky - for it.
What would Natalia feel then? Disappointment, to have an opportunity offered to you from someone who had no place to give it? Betrayal? Some would perhaps cheer for Zota's termination; he had no doubt that he was not entirely loved by his employees. Some still held resentment for what had happened to Loark Voden. He had taken special care not to mention Loark. Loark Voden was a name that would mean nothing to her, but it had been long enough ago that even by the time Natalia had joined, Loark was nothing more than a name occasionally brought up once in a blue moon by the people who had stayed in the mines for far too long. He didn't particularly mind those rare times people would accuse him of having a god complex. After all, it was completely false.
"Then I look forward to working with you more, Natalia." He sent her on her way, sitting down in his desk once more as he awaited the next employee to interview.
Zota had no ambition of becoming a god. A god's purpose was to grant divine right to he who deserved the throne. That is why he needed this expedition. Why he needed Hausos.
