Ellis did not really know what to say. Here was Feofil, lecturing him on theology - something Ellis felt he knew at least enough about. He was devout. He prayed each night, and again each morning. He paid very close attention to all he had been taught in school, and to the things that Pelagia and others in the Aurcaele forces had taught him. To things Xanthe had taught him. Could there really be so much he didn't know? Could there really be things he believed, that he was told, that were lies? Or was Feofil just...
He didn't imagine Feofil was the kind to test someone. Feofil was kind, and Feofil was usually direct, and Feofil seemed to believe in good conquering evil and second chances. Feofil had believed in Ellis, and Xanthe, and Atton, and even Pelagia. Now...
Ellis supposed they were nowhere near anyone else today. The fort was at least three quarter's an hour walk unencumbered, and Xanthe was not with Ellis now - not like before. Just as Ilithiya had revealed things about herself in the quiet of his sleeping chambers, Feofil could be doing the same. A man always questioning what he thought, but willing to take risks where necessary. Is that what made him a man of peace? If Ellis wanted the same thing for himself... Would he need to begin doing as Feofil did?
"F-f-feofil," Ellis stood up with a jolt, perhaps wanting to say something terribly important. As he did, however, his gut clenched and his tongue twisted. This isn't the time, his mind told his body, which froze in place. Say something else."C-c-could you... sssend some-someone with a, uh, uh, a wagon? F-for the... W-wood."

[attr="class","tcowell5"] Before Tristan could take his first step, the boy was sputtering again. If Pelagia had a single good bone in her body, Tristan imagined it was spent upon not blasting Ellis Danton to high heaven for that jitter-tongued annoyance. Feofil was kinder than both he, and Pelagia though, so Tristan stopped and raised Feofil's eyebrows expectantly. Then, Ellis Danton froze.
There was one small piece of Tristan that was concerned Ellis Danton had figured out something was off about Feofil. The rest of Tristan knew that he was a Master Illusionist, and that Feofil was a man he knew well... But that small bit of doubt was a large problem, particularly as the boy stared. Instead of narrowing his eyes, as Tristan would do, he tilted Feofil's head to a slight, questioning angle.
Finally, the boy spoke up. A simple request for help which did not feel entirely genuine to Tristan. The second thought, and not the first Ellis had wanted to share. For some reason, the boy had twice-guessed himself. Perhaps due to Feofil having only just told him to do so. For now, Tristan would need to assume that Danton was going to try and speak in Ayniea's favour again, or against Eleusia, and had rightly corrected himself. There was little Tristan could do to remedy a possible mistake, after all. Other than kill the boy, of course.
"No, Ellis. I believe this is your burden to bear," Feofil's statement was sagely, and then a moment later, he was disintegrating into a golden smoke, which pooled at their feet and settled into the earth. Tristan hadn't teleported, of course. He had just made himself invisible, erecting a perfect sensory copy of what Ellis could not initially see behind him. He made himself silent, covering his footsteps in the trick of distant thunder. He made himself gone, in the way an illusionist would.
The meeting, Tristan decided, had been less than informative.

As quickly as he had appeared in the clearing that had recently been chopped into existance, Feofil disappeared. His words, however, did not depart. They weighed upon Ellis who looked at the mess of stumps he had created, the problems he had invented -- and realized that he was now to face them. Alone. It was just as his other problems were.
The first, the foremost, being here in Atton. Xanthe's anger at him, at what he had done without so much as a word to her; for not holding the courage to speak the truth, and instead hiding like a cindermaw from a storm -- afraid of being extinguished by her. The other problem was of being the carrier of Pelagia's burdens. This idea that because he had accomplished one great thing with his life, that he was destined to continue to repeat such greatness. The problems of his fear of failure, of responsibility.
The other problem was in such a distant place it was almost a fantasy, and yet the visions that Neyela had given to him felt true to his core. Ideas about his father in a place not far above where he had been raised. The simple opportunity Ellis had to discover that missing piece of himself. And knowing that to do so, he would need to leave his other problems to the wind.
He could not fix everything. He could not carry every log he had chopped. He needed... To do what he could, and move on. Perhaps if Xanthe was not going to show herself to him again, he would leave her be. Perhaps if the opportunity to go to Artavia never raised itself, he would not learn the truth. Perhaps he would be only what he came to Atton to be: A soldier of Ayniea, of Pelagia. Now, a Gold Leaf.
Ellis heard the distant rumblings of the storm, and with only the slightest hesitation, began to gather what wood he could carry.
