It was an interesting offer - one Vincent had never thought to propose. Had Vincent asked him to admit guilt whilst promising he could convince Tehodis into his bed - alright, perhaps not into his bed, but into his life once more - he likely would have assented to admitting some wrong doing.
"Perhaps," He began, "I can see how leaving her alone with the doctor was not well thought. If he hadn't been left with her, she most certainly would not have lost her arm... Thankfully the butcher is being executed after his trial completes. The judge has already assured me that a guilty verdict is in the bag. If you think that with that, you can convince her to at least speak with me... Then yes, Thomas, I think that would be brilliant. Her cabin is twenty-three, she's likely there... Send her up to my suite, should she agree."
He was in a good sort now. Pleased over the prospect of Tehodis forgiving him. Excited about the idea of her in his suite, happy to see him. "Oh and Thomas... If this does work, I'll say now that I'll owe you one. But if it doesn't, I won't hold it against you. She's stubborn."
And with that, Markus made his way to his own room. If there was even a chance Tehodis would be joining him, he would ensure that he was clean, well-dressed, and that the room was set for the two to have a heart to heart. Beautiful music. Wine. Candlelight... He enjoyed having friends like Tom.

Being hidden away in someone’s shadow was not as simple as many believed it to be. For example, while a part of Tehodis’ shadow, Kiku could not see clearly, and every sound he heard was severely muffled – that’s why Kiku asked Tehodis’ to count to five. It was very easy to gather when somebody was counting – especially given how slow she counted for him. Kiku liked it when people played along; it made things much more fun.
As Tehodis walked about the ship, Kiku could make out faded, fuzzy figures passing by. He overheard an exchange between her and a man – something about eating souls or soul food, he couldn’t be sure – and was thankful that it wasn’t that long of a conversation. He heard what he assumed was the opening of a door and thought that they had quickly arrived to her room, but he did not hear her start counting. Kiku became concerned; he hadn’t thought what he would do if Tehodis didn’t follow the rules. He supposed that he could just come out randomly, but he knew that if she wasn’t in her room that that could be trouble. He decided to wait for some sort of clue, whether it was her not moving for while or her calling out his name. ‘Kikuriku’ had a very particular flow to it.
Listening intently, Kiku heard Tehodis talk to herself, which was an adorably odd character trait. He wondered what sorts of things he would come to know about her if he continued to hide around her. She was looking for a missing person in Aissic, and Kiku knew right away that she was looking for his mother. His heart melted; Kiku had never met someone who would go so far out of their way to help him, especially when they’d just met. He resolved at that moment that he would never do wrong by Tehodis.
As she grabbed the boxes, Tehodis expanded her shadow, giving Kiku more space to comfortable move around. He could almost feel his bones beginning to stiffen up even though he didn’t have bones in this form. He began to grow impatient, wondering if it was the best decision to hide in her shadow and not just take the key and be done with it. Spying was fun and all, but even Kiku had his limits as to how uncomfortable he wanted to be.
Finally, Tehodis stopped, and Kiku heard the jingle of her keys. Jackpot. He had to resist jumping out of the shadow immediately upon entering the room. You’ve come this far, buddy; wait for the numbers.
‘One.’
Her voice was shaking just a little bit, and she spoke very slowly. Kiku could tell that she was nervous, though he couldn’t tell why. Had something happened on her walk that made her uneasy? Or perhaps she was unsure that Kiku would be there.
‘Two.’
It was now that Kiku realized that Tehodis must have lit candles, as her shadow was split many times, Luckily, she was sitting on her bed, so Kiku shadow walked to her bed instead. He had to move quickly; five seconds was not a long time, even if they were Tehodis seconds.
‘Three.’
Kiku began to emerge from the shadow, a process that took but an instant. He appeared at the head of Tehodis’ bed, while she sat at the foot – he was afraid that she’d forgotten to close her eyes and he didn’t want to reveal his ability to hide just yet.
‘Four.’
These were really long seconds.
‘Five.’
Kiku had enough time to silently walk around the room in the time it took her to say ‘five’, though all he did was walk directly in front of her and lean down so that they were on the same level. He put his hands over his eyes and waited for her to open her eyes. When he heard her gasp just a little bit, he removed his hands from his face to reveal a smile. “Surprise!” Kiku exclaimed, relatively quietly. He wasn’t sure if anyone would come in and disturb them, but he didn’t want to take the chance. “Hopefully you didn’t wait too long?”
Kiku had been counting. It took Tehodis twenty-three seconds to count to five.

It was dark when she opened her eyes. She gasped in shock - and maybe a bit of fear - a part of her worrying she'd made a mistake. But another part of her - her instinct - told her not to worry. That side was proven right as Kiku moved his hands from her eyes, and her vision was graced with the sight of a handsome, smiling face. She matched the smile quickly, laughing a little in her shock as she came to terms with what had just happened. She had looked all over the room. She'd been listening intently. She hadn't seen or heard him.
"That was amazing!" She exclaimed, less quietly than Kiku, but then she had the same thought. She didn't need someone snooping, and telling Woodrow that she was taking visitors. He might see it as an invitation. "How did you do it? It's no wonder you got on the ship without anyone noticing! Could you teach me? That's just..." She tried to calm herself, tried to seem a bit cooler than she was. She realized how close his face was to her's, and was surprised by how she wasn't uncomfortable with it. Not in the usual way, anyways. Her discomfort came instead from the way her hand wanted to reach up and touch his face, or wrap her fingers in his hair. "I'm just... You're pretty amazing. Wow," She bit her lip and scooched back a bit to prevent herself from doing something he'd find awkward.

There was a moment when he was just in front of Tehodis that weighed on Kiku. He’d known that she was beautiful – it was his first thought of her – but this moment pounded through his heart like a drum. Staring into her eyes, which curled ever so slightly as she smiled, Kiku wanted to stop time. He felt himself hold his breath, afraid that moving even to breathe would break the spell.
Then, almost as if she had read Kiku’s mind, Tehodis pulled back, noticeably biting her lip as she did so. Either she was teasing him, or she was nervous. Whichever it was, Kiku felt blessed by the Gods to be in this moment, and internally patted himself on the back for deciding to hide on this ship.
“Heh, you know, a magician never reveals his secrets. But maybe one day I could teach something – if you’re good enough!” Kiku liked joking around with Tehodis. Time spent with her almost erased all of the anger and hatred that was in his heart, even as he glanced over at the boxes that Tehodis had brought in.
Missing persons.
"So, what are these boxes?" Kiku asked, feigning complete ignorance. He couldn’t explain in detail that he had hidden inside her shadow – he didn’t want her to think that he was spying on her; she might think that Kiku didn’t trust her.

He was going to keep it secret. Well, that was fair. If she did things that amazing, she'd likely want to keep it a secret, too - especially from people she'd just met. Especially from law enforcement she'd just met, if it was a thing like infiltrating people's rooms. She didn't think about that, though. That wasn't important when he smiled at her.
She inched off the bed as he pointed out the boxes, excited for the thing she'd done in return for his time. "Oh! Yeah, well, I thought that if we're going to sit and have some lunch, we could do other things at the same time," She managed to stand and went over to the boxes, pulling the lids off to reveal the files, "I don't know if there'd be anything in here... But you said you were going to Aissic looking for a clue about your mother. These are all of the missing persons files for all of Northern Aebrynis that the SSPB has... Which is... Well, all of them. Maybe we'll find something. And if we don't, well, I'll go get different files.
"And for lunch..." She pulled the cover off of the food, the food that only Woodrow received on board the ship. It was lobster, a rice pilaf, and a beautiful looking salad. Well, it would have been beautiful looking, but everything was a bit of a mish-mash after Tehodis had carried it between her shoulder and chin. The pulled butter had poured over, and Tehodis made a face. "Oops."

Looking at the plate of slop that was presented before him, Kikuriku couldn’t help but smile. He had travelled along with Tehodis in her shadow, she he knew the effort that she had put into getting him a meal and even gathering missing person’s files. As he stared at the beautiful woman in front of him, with her worried expression, Kiku decided that he would take one for the team. He picked up a fork and scooped a little bit of everything onto the plate into his mouth.
The first thing he noticed was that the food – all of it – was soggy. Whatever sauce had accompanied the meal (butter, he assumed) had run all over everything, giving it an almost sponge-like texture. The lettuce of the salad had lost all crunch and any hint of a dressing was swallowed up by butter. Kiku could tell that this food was supposed to taste good, there was just so much…
Butter.
“Thanks! It’s funny – this is the nicest meal I’ve eaten in weeks. Do you think there’s any butter nearby? This could use some butter.” Kiku smiled as he scarfed down another forkful. The food didn’t taste bad, and he would be damned if we let Tehodis’ hard work go to waste.
Turning to the files, Kiku examined some of the files that Tehodis had uncovered. He recognized nothing – no names, no places, no places. Of course he wouldn’t, Kiku had never spent much time in Aissic – neither did his mother for that matter. But he had reason to believe that she was there, or at the very least that there was some clue to her whereabouts there. With Tehodis in tow, Kiku began to search the files for some sign of his mother.
“Nariko,” Kiku said, the word shaking out from his mouth. It had been a long time since he’d said her name. He didn’t know why he didn’t like to use her name – maybe he was afraid that that was all she would be now. Not ‘Mom’, but Nariko. Kiku took a breath. “That’s her name. So if you see that…” He trailed off. He didn’t know what he would do if they found anything about his mom.

She laughed, but covered her face with her hand as Kiku dared to try the food. Even when she had messed up so completely, he still remained kind, charming, and funny, and she couldn't bare to stay embarrassed for long. "Next time I'll ask for extra butter," She smiled in response, deciding to suffer her own mistake and snagging a fingerful of rice which she attempted to eat with a straight face. She couldn't stand it though, and her face scrunched up. She liked to eat for the taste and the taste alone - this was no worth it. Not at all.
She laughed as she sat on the couch and pulled the box of cold cases to her feet. She began to rifle through it, looking for anything that stood out. Deciding nothing was looking promising, she pulled the first file in the box and began to flip through it to see if there were any details that seemed to match. As she read, her missing arm came to life once more. A glitter of white magic appeared, drifting from the sewn-in shoulder of her blazer to the box she had just given up on. It fluttered through the files - and the sound caught her attention. She lifted her hand once more to her face, the embarrassment striking once more. "I promise dinner will be better," She promised as she willed the thing to go away before he noticed. It was so weird. Why did it have to be so weird? She didn't want to be weird right now.
Her mental insistence seemed to be enough, and the magic faded, seemingly offended by her thoughts. But there was a piece of her mind that couldn't stop thinking about the file. She put down the one she was reading - which was about a missing man, so certainly wasn't the file she was looking for - and grabbed the one the outpouring of magic had desired.
Nothing in it said Nariko. Nothing about a Gouken. Just a missing woman with no leads and--
"Kiku," Tehodis thought aloud, "This might be a strange question but... Do the Black Cloaks mean anything to you?"
The file she was reading spoke of a woman who worked as a tapestry weaver in Asmin. She was well-liked in the community, but - as the police discovered in their investigation - she had no history before appearing in the city. She disappeared one day without a trace, the only witness report stating that a figure in a black cloak had been seen confronting her mere hours before she disappeared. Her home was stocked with all of her belongings, missing only a few clothing items. When the SSPB got a hold of the file they attempted to follow the lead of the black cloaked figure, and determined that there was a high likelihood that it was not simply a figure in a black cloak: But one of The Black Cloaks. One of Elias Harel's secret police. The file noted that the SSPB had request files from Muerte, but were rejected. The case was put on hold, as no further clues had been found.
Tehodis didn't know why she felt this file held some significance... But something inside of her, some intuition that had come alive in her training with Vincent, that intuition had flared to life once more. Intuition, she called it... But that wasn't its name. Divination.
OOC: Let me know if any of that file sounds silly, or you'd like to adjust any of it to be a better clue!

For a while, Kiku was discouraged. He had only gone through three of the files before he had nearly given up hope. He knew that there were literally hundreds of files available, but something about the fact that he knew absolutely nothing about any of the individuals listed as missing made Kiku feel as if there was never going to be any positive information about this. He took another forkful of what was quickly becoming paste and shoved it into his mouth. He tasted something he hadn’t noticed before – lobster. Glancing over at the food Tehodis had brought him, he noticed little bits of the deliciousness speckled throughout the slop he had created while absentmindedly playing with his food. Another forkful of food rewarded him with more buttery lobster – he was beginning to like it.
While he was lost in thought enjoying his paste, Tehodis spoke to him. She spoke of the Black Cloaks, a name Kiku knew all to well. His face scrunched at the sound of their name and haunted memories flushed forth in Kiku’s mind. The Black Cloaks had been Elias Harel’s personal crones, jumping whenever he said so without question. Kiku and Na’il had had many run-ins with them over the years, and Kiku had the misfortune of knowing their methods all too well.
Na’il, Kiku’s Beastfolk best friend, had been harassed and threatened by them countless times. It was the Black Cloaks who had played a hand in Na’il’s death. The very mention of them made Kiku’s blood boil. “The Black Cloaks, I’ve heard of them,” Kikuriku responded, keeping his dealings with them a secret. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Tehodis – he trusted her as much as he trusted Rose, in fact – but she didn’t need to know this side of him just yet. They’d only met, and Kiku was sure that knowing of his title as ‘Enemy of Elias Harel’ wouldn’t go over well, especially when she learned that Kiku tried to kill a political official. Not exactly first date conversation.

When he confirmed he'd at least heard of them, Tehodis felt a surge of confidence. Her skin seemed to brighten - barely noticeable, but it was clear that the whiteness of her skin had become a little bit more white. "There's a missing woman from Asmin, a tapestry weaver-- She was last seen being accosted by a figure in a black cloak, according to the Aiss guard, but later reports..." She flipped to the back of the file, her finger scanning down the page, "State that the eye-witness said a Black Cloak, not just a figure wearing one. Which is a lot more specific...
"Unfortunately that was a month after the initial disappearance... The SSPB tried to get records from the Muerte government of the location of their Black Cloaks during that time, and possibly their purpose for being in Aissic... But they refused. Does any of that ring bells for your mother, Kiku?"

A tapestry weaver?!
Kikuriku’s mother wasn’t a tapestry weaver by trade, but in his home hung a beautiful tapestry that Nariko claimed was her second pride and joy. He’d never once in his life seen her create a piece, but he remembered constantly being reminded of her skills by the townsfolk. He never once questioned it.
Kiku couldn’t think of why a Black Cloak – or Elias Harel, for that matter – would want anything to do with his mother. She didn’t know any Beastfolk, and wasn’t one herself. She’d not done anything illegal, like Kiku had. She’d never done anything wrong in her entire life. And then, it hit him.
What if they found some sort of clue out about me, and went to her? She could be in danger – or worse – because of something that I did!
He focused his thoughts and tried to remember the events of that fateful day. The day that Na’il died. The day that he woke up covered in someone’s blood. For the longest time, he was afraid that the blood belonged to his mother, but after hearing what Tehodis said, he had hope. Hope that she wasn’t dead, just held captive - a far better alternative to being dead.
He looked up at Tehodis, as she earnestly looked for clues about his mother. It was amazing to Kiku the amount of effort that she was putting towards a stowaway she’d only just met. He thought back to when he first met Rose and the callous attitude she’d had towards him. He wondered how, and if, the two of them would get along.
“I’m not sure,” Kiku responded. He wanted to believe that this missing report pertained to his mother, but he didn’t want to get his hopes up. He’d followed countless leads in many parts of the globe, and came up with nothing. He found it hard to get excited at this first lead.
“I mean, I don’t know if I would classify her as a tapestry weaver – she only ever made the one. And why would she be in Asmin? I don’t think she’s ever even been to Aissic… but I think it might be worth checking out.”
Kikuriku scooted himself over to be beside Tehodis, and took her arm in his hands. He would have taken both of her hands, had she had two. He stared into her bright, blue eyes.
“Thank you, Tehodis. You don’t know how much this means to me.”
