Xanthe knew that Pelagia Xista was Ellis's leader, and she knew Ellis was her soldier and should do what she said, but this was beginning to feel a lot like a parent gently prodding their child to tell them what they did wrong and the kid trying to avoid it all while there's already dinner guests in the room looking on awkwardly. Xanthe wanted to know at least as much as Pelagia, but she really didn't think this was the time. The treaty was covered with so many of their markings that she felt it must surely take a week to get through it all, and all she wanted to do was rest and regain her strength. Pelagia looked much better, she noticed as she thought about rest. She clearly had regained enough strength to refresh herself in the last hour.
To be honest though, she still didn't understand most of what was being said anyway.
It went back and forth for a bit until finally Feofil took out some parchment and a pen and handed it to Ellis. It was at that point of course that Erik broke his silence by slamming his fists... talons? onto the table, the sound of which was quite loud in the small room, or at least particularly loud to Xanthe's ears, and she grimaced at the noise. She always had a harder time understanding Erik the bird man because instead of a mouth he had a beak, so she couldn't follow his lips to try to guess words she didn't catch, but he was speaking with the sharp tone of someone who was pissed off, which to be fair was pretty much his usual voice given that he had such a hot temper. She missed most of his words, but the names he said she recognized, like her own name, Aurcaele, Feofil and Xista.
Having missed the rest and taking the entirely wrong contextual clues, she thought that Erik might be saying that after dealing with this mess with Chief Xanthe, Ellis had spoken to Feofil about wanting to go back to Aurcaele and didn't yet want to break the news to Xista. Her incorrect assumption was unfortunately only strengthened by how ashamed Ellis looked right now, and the way he said he was sorry. That would make sense, why he was in civilian clothes now, if he didn't want to be a soldier anymore. It would explain why Feofil had tried to keep her from seeing him, and why Ellis hadn't wanted to say anything. It would explain why he had felt so distant when he left the infirmary. He was going to leave.
Feofil spoke up then, asking something to Lord Xista though she could barely hear it over the storm of her thoughts or the way her heartbeat thundered in her ears. It wasn't a betrayal, because Ellis wasn't her soldier. He wasn't Attonian, and when he had come here from Aurcaele she doubted he had come with the intention of staying here forever. He had done so much already for the Attonian people, had risked his own life, had saved hers, and after all of that he deserved to go back to where he came from and have some peace. Real peace. It wasn't a betrayal, not really, but it felt like one all the same.
She had perhaps looked stricken for a moment after Erik had finished his tirade, but she schooled her expression back to her usual one. She wanted this treaty signing to go by quickly, but also part of her wanted it to really take a whole week. If Ellis was going to leave, this may be the last time she would see him.

Pelagia considered for a moment that if she hadn't just spent the last three days getting used to acting sweet and bonding with Ilithiya and her penchant for ridiculous saccharine nonsense, she may very well have blanched in utter disgust at the answer that was finally presented to her. That's what Ellis had been wasting his time on? That was the reason for his brewing her suspicions needlessly? It was outright idiotic. That kind of nonsense could have waited till well after the treaty signing. Pelagia was visited with the reminder that for as useful and loyal as he had been, he was still incredibly simple-minded, and that simple mind is what goaded him into actions such as these.
Thankfully, however, Pelagia had gotten so used to Ilithiya that she managed to hold her composure at the news, even if it was given by Erik in an extremely rude fashion. She did, however, feel a bit of anger towards Ellis - he had just made her look like a fool in front of Erik for continuously prodding at a matter that was so inconsequential. Maybe if anyone had bothered to inform her, like they all seemed to be, it wouldn't have been an issue.
She held her lips in a flat line as she straightened her posture, holding her fury in check as well. Oh how thankful everyone in this room should have been that Pelagia had mastered the art of self-control. Right now she was so done that she would have liked to simply kill everyone in the room. Made to wait three days, put up with three imbeciles, waste her energy bringing someone back to life practically, foolishly misled by her own soldier, and then told off by two men she didn't need to hear a damn word of condemnation from.
It was unacceptable.
"Erik," she said, without turning to look at the bird man, a razor-sharp edge to her voice. "Perhaps this matter would not have warranted my prodding if the involved parties had not insisted on needless secrecy. Consider for a moment that we are about to sign a very delicate peace treaty. We should all be doing as much as possible to curtail suspicious, questionable behavior. Do not make the mistake again of questioning my right to know what my soldier has been doing."
The message was as much for Ellis as it was for Erik. Ellis looked almost ashamed of himself at the moment, and he damn well should. But luckily for him, Pelagia decided the matter had now been dealt with. She didn't bother waiting to hear from Erik again.

Feofil nodded, offering Ellis one more glance before beginning to read out the treaty.
Clause by clause they would comb through - the process only made slower as edits were made, as Ellis stumbled over things that couldn’t quite translate smoothly, as arguments were held. It would be a long evening… But they were certain to get through it all.
I. Atton is hereby recognized as a sovereign nation, independent from all others in Fortuna and beyond.
All seemed pleased with this first clause. It was simple enough, and something they all agreed on. After they all initialed the clause, however - Xanthe not really understanding what to do, how to hold the quill, or what it’s purpose was until Ellis scrambled with an explanation - Erik had an addition.
“We ought to recognize it as a part of Eleusia,” He noted thoughtfully, getting a few looks from the rest of the table. “And why would we do that?” Pelagia asked tersely, eyes narrowing as Ellis began to explain what Erik had said.
Xanthe didn’t understand either, but for a different reason. “What Eleusia?” She asked, her tongue not familiar with the strange combination of letters. Ellis blanched, trying to think of ways he might be able to explain the concept of a continent - but Ilithiya stepped in. “Feofil, would you mind summoning a map?” He smiled at her and did just that, handing it off to her with a golden aplomb.
Ilithiya unfurled it on top of the treaty and was pleased to see that Atton had made it onto the display. She pointed to Niseca on the map, and to herself, “Niseca, country.” Then she moved her hand over the other four attached to it, “Aebrynia, continent.” She did the same with Eleusia then, Atton a country. Eleusia a continent.
“Why?” Xanthe asked, perhaps suspicious of Erik’s plans. He seemed unphased however, and met her eyes as Ellis translated his words: “Malscure and Rielcia remain a large threat to Atton. They are dangerous. However… Should they hear of this, they will see it as a gesture of partnership. With this, they are more likely to join the treaty.”
“Atton is Atton.”
“And Vieri is Vieri. But together with Aurcaele, and Artavia, we are Celestia. As proven to you, I hold no love for Pelagia Xista of Aurcaele. This does not mean you are an ally. It means that your borders are near to one another.”
This was a little more difficult for Ellis to translate, but once he had managed something acceptable, Xanthe observed the map once more and then nodded. “I agree.” And with that, Feofil magicked more space onto the page and added a new note to the first clause.
I. Atton is hereby recognized as a sovereign nation, independent from all others in Fortuna and beyond.
Ia. Atton is to be recognized as an independent country within the continent of Eleusia.
Xanthe was the last to sign, seeming to take to a jagged “X” for her initial. To Ellis it looked like a tree being struck by a lightning bolt. It made him smile. Feofil continued, and Ellis kept his eye on the initial as he tried his best to translate.
II. A council of nations is to be formed forthwith, holding the purpose to build, retain, and defend the safety of Atton and her people. The council shall additionally oversee any slight to Attonja independence.
IIa. Chief Xanthe shall act as representative for the sovereign nation of Atton. IIb. Lord Pelagia Xista shall act as representative for the sovereign nation of Aurcaele and her Queen. IIc. General Inspector Feofil Peti shall act as representative for the sovereign nation of Niseca and her King. IId. Lord Erik the Sharp-Eyed shall act as representative for the sovereign nation of Vieri, it's Council, Lord, Elder, and Acharya.
“And more may join, Chief Xanthe,” Feofil assured, conjuring more tea into his empty cup, “As the other countries see our alliance and feel envy -- or fear -- they shall be asked to agree to these same clauses before this new council. Our goal is that the world shall recognize this treaty not as an agreement, but as international law. A new world order.”
Ellis translated, and everyone seemed pleased with this. Pelagia especially seemed to enjoy this clause, the idea of her being a founding member of a world council - whether under the name of her “queen” or not - fitting her impressive perception of herself.
III. Foreign forces are to be reduced to a level consistent with the national safety of Atton and her Attonja.
IIIa. Foreign nations are to retreat from land stolen from Atton where safe to do so.
“If I may interject,” Pelagia was finally the one to stop the proceedings. They all knew it was coming, and suspected she might have more of a demand than she ended up stating. “As a matter of safety and respect for the founding of this council, and as a base of operations for the Aurcaeli forces protecting Atton, should we not retain control of Fort Fabelle?”
“As much as I prefer to disagree with Xista… I insist the same.”
As Ellis translated to Xanthe, she frowned a little. She spoke a word to Ellis that she did not know how to say in Common, and he repeated it to them as best as he could translate it: “She… Sh-she wants t-t-to know if… Er, if th-this ownership would be... I g-guess s-she means t-t-temporary, until the… The end of the wa-war?”
A chorus of nos sounded, with one yes coming from Feofil. “The land is your’s,” Pelagia assured, “We merely wish to retain the fort. To maintain our connection with your country, and to continue working with you, Xanthe.”
Erik narrowed his eyes as Feofil took the mantle of speaker next, “Our’s would be temporary. We would of course, continue to make repairs on the temple. Perhaps until those are completed, and you deem it a safe location for your people once more, Chief Xanthe.” Erik seemed to want to correct this, but held himself back, pleased to have at least earned the space for longer.
“Fine,” Xanthe nodded as Ellis translated what had been said, “I agree.”
III. Foreign forces are to be reduced to a level consistent with the national safety of Atton and her Attonja.
IIIa. Foreign nations are to retreat from land stolen from Atton where safe to do so.
IIIa-1. The nation of Aurcaele may retain control of Fort Fabelle, but must surrender all land it sits upon to the Attonja. IIIa-2. The nation of Niseca, and the nation of Vieri may retain control of the Temple Fort, under the condition that they continue the repair of the aforementioned structure, and remove themselves upon decision by the representative from Atton.
With that matter settled, they moved to the next, one far more agreeable to all parties - particularly to Xanthe.
IV. Foreign nations agree to offer reparations to Atton and her people to cleanse the pain of war, through the actions of repairing Attonja temples, structures, and villages.
“Th-This would d-do… A lot… er... m-much for th-the Attonja opinions of inv-- foreigners,” Ellis roughly translated, and Feofil nodded. “I believe it is much needed,” He told them all, “They have little reason to trust those who come from outside Atton. But if we wish to include Atton with the rest of the world, we must somehow foster friendship between our nations. Shall we continue?”
V. All economic barriers to Atton are to be removed.
Va. Acceptance of Attonja currency to be approved for use with the military forces of (i) Aurcaele; (ii) Niseca; (iii) Vieri. Vb. International trade is to be opened to Atton. Vc. Aurcaele, Niseca, and Vieri are to offer aid in facilitating trade between Atton and the mainland of Fortuna.
Another with little issues. Xanthe didn’t seem to understand ‘currency’, but as Ellis insisted it was a good thing, she agreed to it. She supposed Ellis - who had sacrificed himself for her - had little reason to lie now. Especially not when everything else that was being said seemed to work well.
VI. Attonja land may be allocated to temporary residents with intentions devoted to peace.
After a detailed discussion on the limitations that ought to be made for such a thing, on the reaction of the Attonja when Xanthe and Ellis had returned (a far more detailed discussion from before) and a slight argument between Feofil and Erik that seemed to leave some bad blood between them, the clause was put into more detail.
VI. Attonja land may be allocated to temporary residents with permanent passports from (i) Aurcaele; (ii) Niseca; (iii) Vieri. The intents of any person(s) desiring residence within Attonja must be approved by this council to ensure peaceful intent.
VIa. Final discretion for any resident is under the power of the representative from Atton. VIb. Permanent residence is to be offered to those prepared to integrate fully into Attonja society. Absorbing their language, culture, and religion, and becoming approved by both the council and the representative from Atton.
“If there are no further corrections…” Feofil sighed, conjuring his cup full one last time. It had been a long night, and they had gone through an immense amount of tea. Ilithiya looked exhausted from maintaining the barrier. Erik looked impatient. “Then we can complete this treaty by adding our signatures to the bottom of the document.” Feofil added his own with a flourish, and then Erik moved to do his own, having stood long ago. After both had their signatures added, Feofil slid it to Xanthe next.
Realizing after a moment of confused silence that a signature was likely more complicated than an initial, Ellis raised the parchment Feofil had offered him earlier, and gingerly took Xanthe’s quill from her. “Like this,” He whispered, writing his own name plainly: E-L-L-I-S D-A-N-T-O-N, and saying it as he did. Then he drew an arrow, and signed his name. It was nowhere near as clean or flowery as Feofil’s. Then he wrote Xanthe’s name, speaking it as he did: X-A-N-T-H-E, and another arrow. Then he handed her the parchment to complete his example.

That Pelagia also seemed to be annoyed really just drove the nail in the coffin for Xanthe. She was all but completely convinced Ellis was going to go back to Aurcaele. But, for now, he was still here and they had a treaty to go over.
The process was long, made worse by the fact that Xanthe understood almost none of what was said and had to rely on Ellis to translate just about everything for her. She didn't know what an initial was, and thankfully Ellis showed her. The marking stick, a quill they called it, was strange in her hand and she initialed her X awkwardly wherever it was requested. She noticed everyone else had two markings, but she did not have a second name to mark. She was Xanthe, only.
There were come parts that she didn't understand at all, and which Ellis couldn't translate because it simply wasn't translatable, and she just trusted him on those parts. He had taken to the Attonja quickly and had almost died to save her life, so if he would do that he could be trusted to know whether the treaty would be screwing them over. Everything seemed more or less figured out eventually, and everyone was to sign the bottom. These markings were longer, and honestly she didn't know how to spell her name so good on Ellis for figuring that part out for her.
She looked at all of the signatures that were on it already and knew hers would look unlike all of theirs. She hoped it was not held against her that she was the only one here entirely illiterate. She marked down her X as usual next to where Ellis had written out her name, and then copied the rest of what Ellis had marked as best as she could. The letters were jagged, but readable, when she finished. Good enough. Only one left now, and it would be done. Really and truly. The first step towards peace.

This had to have been one of the most arduous, devastatingly dull tasks Pelagia had ever participated in. She would, of course, be the first to speak on how incredibly necessary this was, how important it was that she had been present to discuss all the clauses of the treaty and ensure that she got her fair dues. Hell, she'd even managed to secure a few addendums that offered greater benefit to her, updates that she had found most agreeable.
But regardless of necessity or benefit, that did not change the fact that this evening had been torturous. And it was only made worse by the fact that Xanthe, who was an illiterate nimrod, had to spend at last two minutes working out how to manage a signature. When it was finally, finally handed over to Pelagia, she had to resist the urge to groan in relief. She signed her name quickly with a neat flourish, hers being the last to grace the treaty, and with that done she breathed an acceptably-tired exhale and stood from the table, meeting each individual sat there with a warm smile.
"And with that signed, we now officially have an accord. Congratulations to you all - we've made a step towards peace."
And for Aurcaele's mighty aid, you are all very much welcome, she sneered internally.

As Pelagia signed the treaty, the feeling of the room changed. There seemed to be a relief that washed over Feofil, Ilithiya, and Erik, and they all stood. "Lord Xista," Feofil smiled, offering her his hand, "You've completely reformed my views on Aurcaele and the strength of her leaders. I'll send a missive to Lord Woodrow's desk immediately, he'll be quite pleased to hear about how mistaken we were about you."
As Feofil spoke, Ilithiya removed the ward on the room, and began to pile her beacons into the corner, Ellis moving to help her - but being refused. Erik, on the other hand, had few words. He nodded to Pelagia, seemingly still not convinced - but decidedly comforted by the presence of her signature on the page. Then he moved to Xanthe and bowed to her with one hand on his chest. He did not speak words, but the show seemed to hold a deep respect. Then, he left the room, too impatient to continue dealing with "these" people any further.
Having been rebuffed by Ilithiya, Ellis stood by the door, not wishing to interrupt any of the important communications of the leaders, but also not wanting to leave. Not without Xanthe, anyways. He watched his shoes, attempting to be patient, but his stomach was a bundle of nerves. Hopefully Pelagia and Feofil would leave before Xanthe, and then he could speak to her more privately. An audience for such a thing seemed to sicken his stomach even more than it would otherwise, and he wasn't sure if he could bear it.
After Pelagia Xista signed the treaty she stood and congratulated them all for their step towards peace, and the air of relief was obvious. Relief to be finished with the treaty because it had been extremely tedious was one thing, but this was the relief of a group of people who never thought this moment would actually come to pass. Xanthe counted herself amongst them, as it had only been a wild dream of hers to one day strike peace with the invaders. Now though, it was looking ever more likely that it was possible all invaders could be convinced of Atton's sovereignty, leading to an end to this war after almost a decade of bloodshed. They all stood from the table then and it appeared the meeting was definitely over.
Feofil seemed pleased, and Ilithiya immediately went about removing the wards that had been up for the duration of the signing. Xanthe saw Ellis move to assist her but he was turned away. Ilithiya could handle it herself, or perhaps she was also upset to hear of his plans to leave. Even Erik, who never seemed to be happy about anything, seemed to be... not angry, at the moment. Once the wards were down though he moved to leave immediately, but stopped to bow to Xanthe who returned the motion. Erik was a hard one to figure out, but she knew he would do anything for his country and the signing of this treaty was probably just as important for him as for her.
With the meeting over, Xanthe's thoughts once again turned to Ellis. He was standing by the door, staring at his shoes. He obviously hadn't wanted anyone else to know of his plans yet, and was likely dreading the coming conversation as much as she was. She wondered if his leader wanted to bring him back with her immediately to Fort Fabelle now that the treaty was signed, or if she might allow him to stay for just a bit longer. "Ellis, v'dauta ut'm Qoah Xista oh yi qux sud'm los fa thahena fa pe thuq."

Translation: Ellis, please ask Chief Xista if I can speak with you before you go back
Post by Ellis Danton on Jan 6, 2017 14:00:27 GMT -7
Go back? Had he translated that right? Go back... Where? He looked from Xanthe to Pelagia and worried that perhaps Pelagia had communicated something before he had gotten there. He worried that she was intending to bring him back to... Fort Fabelle? That wouldn't be too horrible, he would still be in Atton -- but the way that Xanthe spoke made it feel like she was preparing for a goodbye. What had Pelagia said? What had Xanthe heard?
"M-my l-lord," Ellis managed, approaching Pelagia almost shamefully, "M-may I... Er... M-may I b-be d-dismissed? F-for the... the matters d-discussed earlier?"
Post by Pelagia Xista on Jan 6, 2017 15:34:33 GMT -7
Pelagia took Feofil's hand in her own and the two shared a handshake layered with deep respect for one another, matching smiles on their faces. Pelagia's respect, of course, was entirely fabricated, but that didn't matter. Feofil was pleased at last. And now, he was going to open up Markus Woodrow's front door for her.
"Though I am sorry such misconceptions ever existed in the first place, I am more than pleased to finally have them dispelled, Feofil. Thank you for the opportunity. It is my hope that the rest of our little operation is a success," she added, tossing in a slightly nervous-sounding chuckle.
"Announcing a treaty to the world before informing your own leader of the matter is quite a risky thing, yes," Feofil agreed solemnly. "But I believe in the people of Fortuna. And after what I've been through with you these past days, I also believe in the people of your country, for they have put their faith in you. If we expose this truth to them, I trust that their support of you will keep you protected from the wrath of your Queen."
It was almost sickening how sincere those words were. It made Pelagia want to curl a wicked grin, to hear how thoroughly she'd earned Feofil's trust. It was almost pathetic, really. Instead she simply nodded and smiled resignedly.
"Even if I suffer imprisonment for this, it will be worth it to have pointed Aurcaele towards peace. No matter what happens to me, Queen Fabelle would not dare violate the treaty once all of the nation knows the truth."
Seemingly pleased by the strength of character those words demonstrated, Feofil offered an approving nod. "I know many who have gone through similar for their causes. May Ayniea be with you, Pelagia."
Pelagia nodded back, her grin changing to one of pride, and this time it was a pride she felt genuinely. "She is always with me, Feofil."
Ilithiya had been taking down her wards while this transpired, and Erik had already vacated by now - having merely offered Pelagia a curt nod before his exit - so with Pelagia's conversation with Feofil complete, she decided she'd next see to Xanthe and Ellis. Xanthe, Pelagia had noticed out of the corner of her eye, had mostly been observing as everyone stood, seemingly feeling her own relief over the situation. She had then gone to speak with Ellis about something, and before Pelagia could approach and ask about it, Ellis came to approach her first.
He asked to be dismissed for the "matters d-discussed earlier", and Pelagia was reminded of his ridiculous actions that had made her look like a fool. And here he stood with the audacity to ask if he could return to that? Once again Pelagia was visited by a curiosity over whether or not Ellis secretly had nerves of steel or if he was just too stupid to realize when he needed to duck his head quietly.
Looking at him standing before her though, gripped with shame that had him looking small despite standing taller than she, also reminded Pelagia of how she saw him; something akin to a pet, a small dog that was eager to please and overcome with shame when it did wrong. His mindless devotion was incredibly useful. But dogs also needed to be disciplined.
"You are dismissed, Danton," she said. She turned to Xanthe, smiled at the woman, and nodded a deep bow. "Sa Tsenthe v'nesaqs," she said to her. She then straightened up and walked right past Ellis out of the room. She spoke one more sentence as she stepped down the hall though, not even bothering to call over her shoulder as she did. Ellis would still be listening. "You will come see me in my quarters once you are through."
Pelagia and Feofil were having a conversation that appeared to be going well, and it was when they finished that Ellis did as she asked and requested to be dismissed. Pelagia assented and then bowed deeply to Xanthe who returned the motion as she had returned Erik's. When Pelagia spoke, in Attonian, the phrase of worship for the deity of storms Xanthe's mouth upturned into an almost smile. "Sa Tsenthe v'nesaqs," she replied and then Pelagia left. She said something else as she did so, a request for Ellis so see her when they were done. Ellis looked chastised, and Xanthe suspected he would be even moreso after meeting with Pelagia privately later.
Ilithiya was finished dealing with whatever she was doing, which Xanthe could admit to not paying much attention to, and Feofil approached the two of them with that annoying glint in his eye from earlier. He thanked Xanthe again for being a part of this peace treaty, and thanked Ellis for being such a prolific translator, and then he motioned to Ilithiya and said that they would be going now, and he looked to Ellis pointedly, his usual placating smile upon his face, and then the two of them left and it was just Ellis and Xanthe in the room. Xanthe, closest to the door, closed it behind them and turned on Ellis.
"Li leyd'j fa mav sot h'nef yi, Ellis? Ux'j se sud'm se Feofil hont's, ux'j fuma rof mav fa taqnas qe? Yi seys fa snytset yi." Her tone was angry, but also sad. Ellis appeared equal parts worried and confused, and Xanthe took a breath and deflated a bit. "Oh fa lux'set se nasynx se Aurcaele, fa treyd'j xes tha uhnuoj se sad yi.."
---------
