"Yi... Yi exdi reva yi qux qexsoxya se," He responded, pursing his lips together a little as he worked out exactly what he wanted to say, "Mutti lut xes ruvi l'rax yi tuoj ran -- Thys yi lux's se tsui ox Atton. V'nesaqs fa-- os. V'nesaqs os. Oh fa leyj udel yi se."
Yi... Yi exdi reva yi qux qexsoxya se -> I... I only hope I can continue to Mutti lut xes ruvi l'rax yi tuoj ran -> Mutti was not happy when I told her Thys yi lux's se tsui ox Atton. -> But I want to stay in Atton. V'nesaqs fa-- os. V'nesaqs os. -> Protect you-- it. Protect it. Oh fa leyj udel yi se. -> If you would allow me to.

Ellis told her that he wanted to stay in Atton, to protect it. To protect her, though that sounded like a slip of the tongue. Xanthe didn't care. Protecting Atton was protecting her, and vice versa she liked to think. When Ellis asked if she would let him, she reached over and placed one of her hands onto his. "Of course. You will always be welcome here."

When she placed her hand on his, it reinforced his decision. Her touch, her presence, was stronger than anything he had ever felt before. It was like being blessed - being touched by a god. The feeling he got standing underneath a willow tree, the feeling he felt at the jaosi s'na - that was what he felt when Xanthe touched him. He had to wonder what she felt when they touched, if it was anything worthwhile.
"Fa rexen yi," He smiled, and nodded toward her plate, "Os ot emui?"
Fa rexen yi -> You honour me os ot emui? -> It is okay
When Ellis first spoke she shook her head at his words. "Xe, Ellis, os ta fa l're rexen yi," she replied, a slight smile on her face and only sincerity in her tone. "Di sa hej ta jadoqoey't. Sux'm fa. Hen abanisox'p."

No, Ellis, it is you who honour me. And the food is delicious. Thank you. For everything.

His ears went a little pink and he nodded, going back to eating. He was happy she liked it - even if she only did because he had made it. In fact, it might have made him even more prideful if she was just saying it for his sake. He didn't mind people favouring him. It had only been his mother before, but now Xanthe, Ilithiya, Feofil - and in some ways, even Pelagia - seemed to appreciate him more than any others had done before.
It got him to thinking... His life had been so meaningless before he had come to Atton as a soldier. What had Xanthe's been like? Obviously it would have been better. Safer. But he couldn't imagine her as anything but a warrior. Did the tribes battle? Did she fight to protect her people from mysterious beasts? His brain couldn't compute a Xanthe sitting in her tent, knitting. Playing an instrument. Building things? It seemed so far fetched.
"Xanthe, l'rus joj fa je thah'na se lun?" He asked, finishing off his jaegerschnitzel and grabbing a little bit more. It was just as good as he'd remembered it. He wondered if Pelagia would like it enough to not make good on her threats. He hoped that she didn't have a room up too high.
L'rus joj fa je thah'na se lun? -> What did you do before the war?
Xanthe had been twirling some of the soursomething onto her fork but she went completely still when Ellis asked his question. She hoped he was too busy with his food to notice her hesitation. "I have always protected my people," she replied eventually. She couldn't lie to him, but while what she said was true, it was not the whole truth. "And you? Were you always a scout?" Her question was not just a diversion, but a genuine curiosity. She wanted to know about him, about Aurcaele, about what he did before he came to Atton with the war. He played the piano so beautifully, there had to be a story before he was a soldier.

He couldn't help but notice how she seemed almost... Uncomfortable with the question. She answered, and he would always trust her to be truthful with him - but it seemed almost... Too vague? He wouldn't press her, no, that wasn't him, and it wasn't their relationship... But he did note how different it was from most of their interactions.
"N-no," He answered too quickly to speak Attonian, and shook his head with a sound that combined a laugh and a cough, "Xe... Yi lut - er... Yi thods tsy'h. G'nef lej. Reytaz fets'a," He added hand motions to help, not sure if he'd gotten the words right. He pretended to hammer something to the table, hoping that made it clear, "Os lut run'j len'm, thys peej. Xes quxbut... En tsexa. Je Attonja yta lej men thod'j'ux'z us ud?"
Xe... Yi lut - er... Yi thod'j'et tsy'h. -> No... I was - er... I built things. G'nef lej. Reytaz fets'a. -> From wood. Houses mostly. Os lut run'j len'm, thys peej. -> It was hard work, but good. Xes quxbut... En tsexa. Je Attonja'z yta lej men thod'j'ux'z us ud? -> Not canvas... Or stone. Do Attonians use wood for buildings at all?
Xanthe looked amused when Ellis answered quickly and then coughed a laugh. That was so.. Ellis. There was no one she ever knew who acted quite the same way as he did. She found it incredibly endearing, and had since the very start. He had a very gentle soul. None of this would have happened if he didn't - right from their very first meeting when he had been willing to learn instead of attack. She would always admire him for that.
He said that he used to build things, houses, out of wood. He certainly had the build for that kind of job. She could imagine it. She wondered if he would go back to building things after the war. She wondered why he had become a soldier. "We use wood to support our tents, and for that which stone will not work. We use stone for buildings that will be permanent. Stone does not rot from rain, and does not catch fire when struck by lightning." She suspected the weather was much less wild in Aurcaele, if they used wood for many things. Looking out the window, she didn't think the delicate willow could survive storms the likes of which Atton was familiar.

He hadn't even thought of the weather, it had become so natural to see storms. So second-nature to hear the booming of thunder. It had become a comfort for him... But in Aurcaele he hadn't had such things. They were above the clouds in Aurcaele (not that Xanthe would know), so rain, thunder, lightning... It didn't exist. They always had clear skies. It was the ground they needed to worry about. All of their buildings had thick, hollow iron floors - places for water to go when the clouds became too thick with them... And the rest was built with wood, high enough that water couldn't touch. Marble was common, too, but only for fanciful buildings like temples or palaces.
"I had never seen rain before the day I came here," He admitted, the sound of thunder outside seeming to accentuate his point, "But now... I do not think I could live without it. Feeling the rain on my skin the first time... It was like being kissed by the Gods." He flushed a little bit, not being particularly good about opening up. He usually didn't have the words to explain these things... But Attonian felt natural to his tongue. It felt natural to his being.
ooc: No Attonian this time... I had written out the whole post and evidently not pressed post, annnnd was then really confused why it wasn't on the page. ):
Xanthe's eyes widened at such a casual, yet unbelievable statement. He had never seen rain before he came to Atton? He had never seen rain before he came to Atton! No matter how many times she thought about it, it didn't even seem possible. Rain was... it was life.
Ellis seemed to feel the same way and he said he didn't think he could live without rain now. There was no mistaking the pride on her face when he said that feeling rain for the first time, here in Atton, had felt like being kissed by the Gods. He flushed again and Xanthe chuckled. "How does anything grow in Aurcaele without rain?" She still couldn't believe it.
Meanwhile, she decided to try something new, the dark cake with cherries on it, and it was delicious. She wondered what Ellis thought of Attonian food. Did he like it like she liked his Aurcaele food?
She liked just talking like this. Later he would have to go to speak with Pelagia Xista, about what Xanthe did not know, and then after that they would have to refocus on what was ahead - the war, and trying to spread the peace treaty to other countries. Would he be able to continue working with her, or would Pelagia Xista want him to return to Fort Fabelle?
