She seemed flabbergasted at how Aurcaele could survive, how anything could grow without rain. He laughed a little bit at this, but then realized that... It made sense. He was so used to how things worked in Aurcaele, that he had never before considered how it might be strange to other countries. He thought of how to explain it... But it was complex. "Aurcaele ot... yv," He pointed to the ceiling, "Ex q'deyj'z. L'rana fa lusan qefaz jelx se sa v'duxs'z, yi v'duxs'z... Suma lusan h'nef sa q'deyj'z. Os tafz todi thys... Er..." He made layers with his hands. The first layer he emphasized, "Q'deyj'z." Then he put his hand on top of that, "Teid." Then finally, he moved the bottom hand up one more, to rest highest, "Aurcaele. Os ot... Bani johanax's h'nef Atton."
Aurcaele ot... yv. -> Aurcaele is... up Ex q'deyj'z. L'rana fa lusan qefaz jelx se sa v'duxs'z, yi v'duxs'z... Suma lusan h'nef sa q'deyj'z. -> On clouds. Where your water comes down to the plants, our plants... Take water from the clouds. Os tafz todi thys... -> It seems silly but... q'deyj'z -> Clouds. teid -> Soil. Os ot... Bani johanax's h'nef -> It is... Very different from
While Ellis was explaining about how their plants got the rain before it fell form the clouds, Xanthe couldn't stop looking out the window at the willow tree. She wanted to see it, she wanted to see Aurcaele and its clouds. She had never really wanted to see the outside world before, she was always content just with Atton. But now, she wasn't sure. She knew what it would feel like to walk through the door. "It sounds very different," Xanthe agreed, turning her attention back to Ellis and smiling a bit, "but nice, in its own way. Like the food! Different, but good."

Different, but good. He nodded in return, happy to share these things with her. It was strange how he had assumed she would simply know them. He had been taught in school about how plants worked in other lands, the ones on the ground, and travelers to Aurcaele were never surprised - amazed, but never surprised - to see how things grew there. He had to remind himself that Xanthe didn't know there was an outside world. Or if she did, she didn't know about it. It was strange to him... And he had to wonder if she preferred not knowing. He wondered if she wanted to know more, "Yi ruba danx'et bani utheys Atton. Ot sana... Uxisoxp fa luxs se m'xel utheys Fortuna?"
Yi ruba danx'et bani utheys Atton -> I have learned much about Atton. Ot sana... Uxisoxp fa luxs se m'xel utheys Fortuna? -> Is there... Anything you want to know about Fortuna?
Different. Xanthe looked to her plate, then back to the window where the willow tree softly swayed. There was a whole world outside Atton, and each country was different. Each country was as different from each other as they were from Atton. A part of her had always known that to some degree, but she was so focused on Atton she had never really thought about it before. Never really realized how much there was beyond the storms that kept her country safe and secluded for so long. But that was why she wanted to broker peace with the other countries - peace so that her people could see what she never had. To be a part of the outside world, if they chose. It was her place to protect Atton, and she could not do that if she left.
She shook her head, but then stopped. "I do not need to know about Fortuna, but I would like to know more about you, Ellis. Soldier who used to build houses. Scout who plays music and cooks. Invader who speaks my words better than his own. Friend who sacrificed himself without hesitation for someone he's known less than a moon. What brought you here? Why leave Aurcaele, your job, your life to join the army?"

He looked down at his plate as she described him. In her words, he sounded... Impressive? No, maybe not quite impressive, nor heroic, but he certainly sounded less like Ellis-Allen Danton. It was embarrassing to hear in a way, but also made him swell with something he felt so infrequently, that he might have mistaken it for embarrassment: Pride. Yes. He had built houses, and he was good at building. And he could play music, and he was passable at that. She definitely seemed to like what he had cooked (even if Mutti had helped quite a lot). And yes, Attonja was easier for him to speak, moreso than Aurcaeli, and strangely even more than Common. The last thing she said however, gave him the most pride. Perhaps some might think those actions foolish... But it made him feel... Better.
The question she asked however, didn't do the same. He knew very well why he had left Aurcaele. He was awkward and friendless. His mother was really the only person he knew beyond building teams. He had no one, and nothing back home. He had hoped that the army - a place of brotherhood, a place of Togetherness - would push him to be something more. It had, in a way. Just not the way he had anticipated. "Er," He managed after a bit of a silence, which he had filled by stuffing his mouth with food to prevent speaking, "Os ot u todi nautex."
He wanted to say: I wanted to learn, or something of that sort. But she had not lied to him. He would not lie to her. "Yi ruba xe exa us refa. Yi sox'm'et rana yi q'zyd'j... Hox'j faux'ux. U udi?" He finally met her eyes sheepishly, struggling to keep her gaze, "Yi sox'm yi joj."
Os ot u todi nautex. -> It is a silly reason. Yi ruba xe exa us refa. -> I have no one at home. Yi sox'm'et rana yi q'zyd'j... Hox'j faux'ux. -> I thought here I could... Find meaning. U udi? -> A friend? Yi sox'm yi joj. -> I think I did.
Ellis took a bite of food after she spoke and chewed on it thoughtfully before replying to her question. He said his reason was a silly reason, but he had no one at home (she assumed he meant beyond his mother). He said he wanted to find meaning, and she thought back to when he had thanked her for giving him just that. He said he wanted to find a friend, and she smiled when he said that he thought he had. "Fa nautex fui tha todi thys os daj fa rana. Fa hos rana. Yi uf ruvi fa qufa. Ud eh Atton elat fa hen lus fa jexa" She knew he always reacted to praise by flushing and looking simultaneously pleased but also like he didn't believe he deserved it, but she hoped he understood how much he really had done for them all.

He smiled and accepted the compliment as ungracefully as he always would, and enjoyed more of the meal. The two continued speaking for some time, and for Ellis: This was perfection.
This could have been a dream, and he wouldn't question it. For all he knew, he had truly died when he had tried to save Xanthe, and this was his reward. An afterlife forever with his dearest friend. Or some version of her. His Mutti was in this world. Master Feofil. All of his favourite foods... The willow. The jaosi s'na. He was a hero in this world. Yes, that made far more sense. He was dead.
The chiming of a grandfather clock in Aurcaele (out of sight) brought him out of his reverie. It reminded him of the hour - and reminded him that Pelagia was waiting. Waiting, and angry. He stood up at the sound, knocking his knees on the table and being too concerned to note the pain. "I-i'm s-sorry," He spouted quickly, sad to have ruined the perfect moments he was having. But there was no permanent bliss that would involve the fear that had spread from his stomach to the rest of his body.
He lowered his eyes to Xanthe, biting his lip, and all he said was: "Pelagia."
Xanthe hadn't been keeping track of the time, and even when the clock chimed she wouldn't have paid it any mind except that Ellis jumped to his feet so quickly he knocked his knees against the table and almost sent the remaining food flying. She immediately got to her feet as well, prepared for some sort of attack or something by the sudden panic on his face, but he apologized and simple said one word, 'Pelagia'. Xanthe looked around as though expecting the woman to have appeared in the hallway behind her, but there was no one. She wasn't here - she had asked Ellis to go to her. Xanthe didn't know if she had specified a time, but Ellis seemed to think it was right now, so she nodded decisively. "Okay," she said, looking to the table and the food and wondering if he wanted to move it all into Feofil's room or leave it here. "Now?"

He felt bad. He had spoken so suddenly - and likely spooked her, as much as someone like Xanthe could ever be spooked - and she asked him 'now?' and he wanted to say 'no, nevermind, it's fine, let's continue, you're my best friend and I want to stay here forever'-- but no. The longer he made her wait (how long had they been here? Two hours? Three? Four?) the worse it would be. She was already angry. How soon had she wanted him there? She hadn't said, but he knew she didn't expect him to take this long. Or at least, he was pretty sure of it.
"Yi uf teni. Yi..." He took a deep breath and met her eyes with a steady gaze, "Yi reva yi qux'et tsui nosa rana henaban. Thys-- Tra ot yi er... Qoah. Tra qux'et--" He wouldn't say throw me from the tallest tower even if he feared it, and he wouldn't say all of the other things he feared. Things like Pelagia sending him back to Aurcaele. Things like her saying he was distracted by Xanthe, and that he would be more useful elsewhere. Away from Xanthe.
"Sux'm fa," He decided was best, taking a knee before her, "Hen truna'ux sot los fa." Looking up at her like this, he always felt moved to reverence. He moved his hand to touch her cheek, nearly withheld it, but finally let it touch her. She was always warm. Her skin always energized him. "Nats lad... Di yi lod faas fa upuox qefa sefenel."
Yi uf teni. Yi... -> I am sorry. I... Yi reva yi qux'et tsui nosa rana henaban. -> I hope/wish I could stay right here forever. Thys-- Tra ot yi er... Qoah. Tra qux'et-- -> But-- She is my er... Chief. She could-- Sux'm fa, -> Thank you, Hen truna'ux sot los fa. -> For sharing this with me. Nats lad... Di yi lod faas fa upuox qefa sefenel. -> Rest well... And I will meet you again come tomorrow.
Ellis apologized and said he wanted to stay here forever, which earned a fond look from Xanthe. She understood he had to follow the orders of his chief though, and their dinner had already run longer than Pelagia Xista might have expected. Her meeting couldn't be particularly time-sensitive though or she would have insisted he meet with her before the dinner, right?
Ellis thanked her then and took a knee in front of her which for her felt both fitting and vaguely uncomfortable. She was used to being given honour and praise and reverence of course, as she was the leader of her people, but Ellis was her friend and maybe what she wanted was for him to just treat her like a normal person. But he always seemed so... pleased? to do these things, she didn't want to tell him to stop. He looked more comfortable kneeling before her than he had sitting across from her at the table. He moved to touch her cheek and bid her to rest well, promising to see her again the next day.
She returned the touch, placing her hand on his cheek as well and smiling down. "Thats dym us sa fasox'p. Sux'm fa hen sa iyfi hej. Sa tsenthe v'nesaqs." The last part came automatically, as it did with her own people, and then she motioned for Ellis to stand and she nodded her head to him. "Goodnight Ellis," she said to him before taking her leave. She would stay in the same room she had the last time, and then come tomorrow she would determine her next course of action.
