While magic has lead the charge in how Fortuna developed as a world, not all born on its face are gifted with magic. In fact, there are more than a fair half of the world with no capability for it, who can only hope that magicians act with good intentions instead of bad. In most cases, this is a safe expectation. Magic lightens heavy loads, offers a disposal for waste, and in general makes life easier for all citizens of the world.
...But in other cases, magic creates more problems than it solves, with the weakness of mortal and machine becoming evidence of a dangerous status quo. This has caused many non-magic using innovators to invent technology that strengthens mortals lacking magic. These technologies may seem advanced in the concept of a high fantasy world, but in Fortuna, they are important developments that keep mages from ruling the world with an iron fist.
Below are a sample of some of the technologies you might be able to find in Fortuna, along with which places they can most commonly be located, or where they are most commonly used. This is not a comprehensive list, and you are welcome to think of other ways in which innovators could have improved the lives of non-magical mortals. The innovations are listed alphabetically.

The aeroplane is a recent invention that has become popularized for military use in Artavia within the last five to ten years. They cannot fly for particularly long distances, and so are usually transported on air ships to occupied nations, and then flown short distances for scouting missions, or supply deployments. Example.

Low-tech still cameras are prevalent in Artavia, and have begun to gain popularity elsewhere. It has made the permanence of mortals far cheaper to obtain, and is likely one of the most popular innovations to have come from Artavia. Example.

The first elevator was developed in Artavia, and in fact - almost all elevators can be found there. Most don't trust the things, preferring to rely on stairs, or magic. Dumb waiters are far more common outside of Artavia, people not having a problem entrusting their objects to something so strange. Example.

Firearms are one of the biggest innovations of the modern era, and have closed the gap between vagrant mages and law enforcement. While no firearms have been approved for personal use, they are seen in official capacities. Many law enforcement organizations (though not militia), and militaries have taken to the use of mechanical firearms. Pistols are more commonly seen in the former, while rifles can be found equipped in the latter. Of course, laws can only stop so much... Some less than savory characters have managed to obtain firearms for themselves and use them for nefarious purposes. Pirates, assassins, and other such thugs have been seen in possession of firearms, making them all the more dangerous. Example.
★ Found: Artavia (Law/Military/Some Personal Use Recorded), Dirys (Law/Military), Fiamont (Minimal Military), Liesdro (Law/Military), Muerte (Law/Military), Submiere (Law)

There are two kinds of lights found in Fortuna that aren't of magical, or natural birth. Crank-powered lights are most common, and require a central crank to be constantly moving to generate energy. Where these are used, one can usually find animals tied and forced to walk in circles to move the crank - though occasionally the crank itself is moved with magic. The other type of light, and far less common, are electrical lights. These are powered by lightning, which is heavily farmed in Vieri and Aurcaele, or by Electrium, which can be mined in Dirys and Atton. Example.

1) It has been found that the extremely powerful pull of magic around Rielcia tends to stop most of these devices from working. Magnetism and electricity seem to be quite futile in particular, with the heavy air of magic rendering them obsolete.
2) While this covers innovations that affect much of the world, there are individuals who may create things on a more personal level. Inventors and engineers are in their hey-day during this era, after all. Some innovators of note include Gurk, Thomas Dunn, and Vincent Laeretti for player characters; and Vega Tibble, Miles Echton, and Eliza Edroit for NPC characters.
