It had taken her nearly two weeks but she had finally got herself a nice place. And she did mean nice. Ayasha grinned wickedly to herself as she turned around slowly and surveyed the rather large sitting room that made up the main area of it. No more little kept bird for Ayasha. No more places bought for her, no more lock and key, she was free and at the age of thirty it was about damn time too. She was looking forward to seeing just how much damage she could cause, just how deeply she could work herself into the grain of things. [break][break] She had made her own connections after all, and she knew how to work them. It was only a matter of time before the little bird set up her own shop and got to working it. But for now… she wanted to check out her new coop. [break][break] With a little hop that betrayed just how excited she was, Aya set down the last of her bags in the corner and then paused to look in the mirror she had propped by the side of the wall. She grinned and tilted her head. Okay, good to go. Ready to go. Every hair in place, just like she liked. She hummed softly, the lower register voice she mostly used feeling lovely in her throat and she was skipping out the door, keys tucked into the pocket of her pants, orange, red and yellow hair streaming behind her. [break][break] Well, first thing was first. She walked around her own block, as she had before she had gotten the place to get a better lay of the land, see what she could use if she needed to. The setting sun created plenty of shadows for her to walk among—she had stayed inside and began setting up her new place during the hours the sun was high—and she was pleased to note it was just as good of a home base as she had originally thought. [break][break] Later she would find somewhere for her to work as Amber—a pub or a bar was best—that wouldn’t mind her taking over just covering shifts. Later she would set up as Shiloh among the elite and later she would reach out to a few contacts as Ariette. Right now, she walked among those she would be sharing a home town with as Ayasha, not even noticing if she got a look or two as the shades in her hair shifted, as she glanced about. She was getting that to be a common occurrence. [break][break] It only took a few moments before she felt like she had done the basest of what she had set out to do and was ready to wander, to walk, to meet people if she could. She was… weird but she enjoyed people. Okay, so mostly she just enjoyed pissing people off. But she would get to that. She finally just decided… to play the lost newcomer card. Why not? It usually worked to establish herself. So she jogged over to the nearest person and put on a slightly self-depreciating grin and a shake of the head. Hey, sorry, I’m new around here…. Mind giving me a bit of help? she asked, thinking she had scouted out the right person to ask and ready to see what would happen. Why not?

[attr="class","vpostb"]
[attr="class","vpostbg"] The world seemed so much a fickle, changeful place.
Her journeys, once, had excited her, had brought with them the thrill of adventure; and yet, now... with each city she felt a new burden upon her slender shoulders, as if the dismal state of the world was her own doing, or, at least, her own responsibility to mend.
She had begun to be frustrated with herself, debate the call of destiny. ‘Bear no cross so heavy as the one they build themselves’, she reminded herself, from one of those books in Malscure, and yet...
Neyela Deastellae felt the tendrils of fate stirring all around her. Something was meant to happen. She could feel it, and, when she managed it, read it in the stars: change, rebellion. And she saw herself in those stars.
And it was true, when she saw a young beastfolk child terrorized or heckled, she could not stand by. When she saw the poor men in Dirys denied the simplest pleasures of life to slave underground, she shook with some tumultuous emotion she could little describe. Fierce as her love was for Thanatos, this thundering fury quaked through her veins, eclipsed any love or fear or grief she had ever known. She doubted for not a slivered second with these injustices before her that she was meant to save these people, her people.
But now, here, leaning against a pillar in the shade of a sunny day, with the laughter of children about her, Thanatos waiting in the memory of her closed eyes, now... she thought perhaps a quiet life suited her. A happy life. One with simple desires.
Perhaps...
“Hey, sorry, I’m new around here…. Mind giving me a bit of help?”
Lilac eyes danced open; and met bright cerulean ones, and a shock of rainbow hair framing a pretty face. It took a few blinks to accustom her eyes – to the light and to the brightness of that hair.
But, once she had, she managed a cordial smile, straightening her torso, lifting her chin, just a fraction.
Neyela wasn’t the kind to look haughty on purpose. In truth, she was a kind soul; evidenced enough by the bleeding of her soft heart at the cruelty of the world around her, but she exuded an unintentional aura of authority.
”I’ve just arrived, myself,” she murmured, the words followed by an amiable tug of her lips, ”But I can try. What are you looking for?”
Oh yes she had indeed scouted well. Score one to her skills. Well, she would hope that they would be stellar after all of the years she had taken to hone them to a fine point. It had been at a guess, watching for a moment and picking out the usual markers that said kind and helpful in most people. The air she had about her was interesting. One that had made her at least curious enough to pick her out of the others she had debated and it only grew when she was approached. Now wasn’t this just interesting? [break][break] Plus, she couldn’t help but be utterly interested by her eyes. She enjoyed eyes. So many shades and colors and she filed that one away for possible future use. [break][break] But back down to business. She could focus and observe at the same time. It had been what had kept her alive and paid these past few years and she’d be damned if she didn’t do it for herself too. The moment that the young woman—or young seeming woman, one could never tell—announced that she was also new to this place but would try to help, she knew that she had picked up the right mark for this. It didn’t exactly hit what she was looking to do, establish herself a little, but she could totally improvise. And, from years of practice, turn what would be a relieved grin on the inside into a grateful smile. [break][break] She didn’t even notice the look at her hair. She had had rainbow hair for a while now. She was used to the looks and if she ignored them, eventually people figured it must be at least slightly normal and got used to it. ”That would be great, maybe we could help each other out then,” she said, sticking to what she had chosen to go with here. Helpful, friendly, a little lost. Later, if she hung around the chick, she’d introduce the other parts of herself. The ones that were a bit snarkier, so that way she wouldn’t have to always watch her tongue. It was a total pain in the ass to have to watch her tongue, especially when she had one as wild as her own. [break][break] ”I was just looking for somewhere decent to grab a bite, or something to drink, I’ve been wandering about all day and was trying to get a good recommendation” she said, with a bit of a sheepish grin once more, easily pulling on the bashful. Find a place where she could eventually set herself up as Amber and watch the people of this place to get a feel for it was really what she was trying to do but, hey, why was she actually ever going to say that out loud? She was a damned good little bird and, as she enjoyed calling herself, spy, because she kept her mouth to herself when it came to her secrets. And a sharp tongue when it came to just about everything else!

[attr="class","vpostbg"] ”That would be great, maybe we could help each other out then,”
Neyela smiled; warmly, openly, eyes wide and trusting, but there was a hint of warning flashing in some obscure corner of her mind. The words sounded those of a salesman, and everyone knew salesmen weren’t to be trusted.
”I was just looking for somewhere decent to grab a bite, or something to drink, I’ve been wandering about all day and was trying to get a good recommendation”
Well, that was innocent enough, she figured. Toying with a thin strand of alabaster hair – the direct opposite to her companion’s rainbow locks – lavender-tinted eyes scanned the square in silent thoughtfulness.
“I’m just passing,” she murmured, “but I heard in The Marlin last night that Brother Jord’s has summerwine, and his wife makes fresh ceviche.”
It was a somewhat muggy day, on the warmer path into Spring, and Neyela was willing to bet that sweet wine and fresh fish would sound like heaven to anybody, and so, with affirmation from her bright-haired and –eyed companion, she turned and began the short trek to the nearly-hidden hole-in-the-wall Pub.
“My name is Neyela,” she introduced, and, after the girl returned the favor, prodded; “Why have you been wandering all day?”
Though she was out of practice with the idea, making a friend – even for a day – was a truly nice change. Her journeys so far had been torturously lonely, her only solace increasingly regretful reminders of Thanatos, risking his own life for his people.
But, she would, too, she knew. She would help them as much as he was. More.
Her destiny was always so obviously determined to her, the solid ground upon which she walked through her life; but it was no coincidence that she had lingered in this town, mulling on the mundane desire of a quiet life, where lunch with a friend was commonplace, where Thanatos waited at home for her, where singing in ritzy clubs was a living, and not just an opportunity for some coin and a roof...
The young woman seemed interesting enough to Aya. And definitely seemed helpful and that was half of the reason that she had chosen her. Okay, so that was all of the reason that she had chosen her but let’s not get too nitpicky here. She rocked back on her heels a bit—body language keeping it easy, no other agenda here, though she hadn’t realized her words had struck a chord, this was what she got for attempting to play nice, she was bad at nice—as she stated that she was just looking for somewhere to grab some grub. [break][break] She was just passing, but she had heard… oh fabulous. Then she could doubly scout for a bit of a place to lay down her roots as Amber. She was a bit annoyed with herself for picking someone passing through, didn’t help establish herself as someone who was good and not to look twice with if she didn’t pick a good person to vouch for her but damn, she’d deal. She grinned. That sounds heavenly” she said, with a little bit of a nod, letting the other young woman lead the way towards the place that she had mentioned. [break][break] ”Neyela” she repeated, twisting the name about her tongue. Ayasha liked new things, what could she say. She grinned a bit, keeping it sheepish instead of that bit of an edge as she preferred, a sarcastic edge that is. ”I just moved here, I was trying to get my bearings and make sure it was… a good place to be. Ayasha, by the way,” she introduced herself, with that little tidbit slipping out because, well, that was another bit of fun for her. She wanted to try and get a better read on this girl, so why not? [break][break] She shoved her hands into her pockets, walking along next to Neyela, letting her eyes wander a bit before she paid attention to her current companion once more. ”And what has you just passing through?” she asked, returning the question of the day back on her, wondering. Most people seemed to wander, at least a lot of the more interesting people that she had met did, and the reasons were always interesting. If, sometimes, a little bit repetitive.
