Welcome to the world of Fortuna, a land of fantastic proportions. This is an original fantasy roleplay that takes place in a world developed over nearly a decade of work and collaboration. We aim to encourage all participants to have a hand in the stories of the characters here, and the world around them. Your choices are key - so make them with pride. You decide who wins the wars, you decide who becomes King, the world is ours, and together we will bring it to life!
Dee leaned against a blackened tree and pulled off a boot, upending it to dump out a rock, muttering about how it even got in there when the boot went almost to her knee. The top of the tree was ripe with fruit but also seemed to be engulfed in magical flame. She couldn't tell if touching it would burn her or not, so she decided against trying to pick any of the fruit. The food wasn't why they were here anyway - she and Trevor had heard stories about a beast that was stalking this area lately and it was starting to scare off the tourists. You'd think with all the people coming by here to look at the fancy magic fire trees it would scare off anything else but apparently this one was either particularly angry or particularly lost because it had stuck around long enough for them to have heard about it when they'd been almost a day away.
Of course, Trevor was instantly interested. The stories seemed to be conflicted over what it was, but everyone knew one thing: it appeared to be as covered in flames as the trees were, and nobody could get close enough to see anything better. Naturally they would want to get close enough to see it, because Trevor wanted to study the darn thing. He always wanted to study the thing. Whether it was a friendly floating poof or a deadly flaming beast you could count on good ol' monster chronicler Trevor to want to get all up in its business and learn as much as he could about it. And Demetra got to make sure he didn't get melted into a sad puddle by the lava part of it.
She had come as prepared as possible considering they didn't know what to prepare for except 'fire' - she was wearing leather armour and some of her plate but she was pretty sure if this thing could spit fire or whatnot she probably didn't want too much metal going on. Her shortsword was in the scabbard on her belt, not drawn yet as they had no indication the beast was anywhere nearby, but available just in case. She absently fiddled with the storage charm around her neck, hearing the tings and clinks as her many rings tapped against the polished ruby. Her shield was stored for now, but she would take it out when it was needed. Besides she didn't want to get it burnt to a crisp and have to replace it. If this thing was all firey though she might get some use from the elemental burst spell she'd learned all those years ago - splash that sucker with some water if things got too heated.
The area they were in was only sparsely populated - the midday heat and stories of a scary beast were enough to keep all but the most stubborn tourist away. Still, the foot traffic this place saw was enough that it would be hard to track the beast, but from the stories it seemed to stalk people more than people stalked it so maybe it would find them first. "So Trev, what's the plan?" she asked, holding a hand over her eyes to shield against the sun and looking back at her companion.

Trevor was excited. This, of course, was nothing unusual for the boy, not when it came to doing what it was he did. He was always excited when it came time to track down a new beast, to study it in its natural habitat, to potentially help out people who were being troubled by it. Especially that last part, as it would help the locals be more informed and probably see the animal as less dangerous, maybe not something to kill on sight!
But Trevor was especially excited because since coming to Fiamont, there had been a surprising dearth of creatures to study who seemed, well... Fianese? There had been a lack of the FIRE he had been expecting, he guessed. They'd found some Ash Winders, of course, and a few dragons here and there (though nothing outside of the usual Jareidens, honestly). But not a whole lot beyond that. Fiamont was supposed to be renowned for its fiery natives, and yet whether through bad timing or simply bad luck, Trevor had barely encountered anything that could so much as produce a puff of smoke. They'd even tried to go Charback-Watching once, on a scheduled tour of all things, set up to tour a damn RESERVE where the dragons were known to live peacefully, but of course, the dragons all just happened to be swimming in the lava that day, apparently unwilling to surface.
It had been a drag. And that wasn't even to speak of Trevor's Magnum Opus, the fabled Volcadon he so desperately wished to meet some day...
But this? This was PROMISE. There was some kind of fiery beast that was terrorizing locals in a place where it normally wasn't supposed to be. It had made frequent appearances, which meant good things for their chances of finding it, AND it was aggressive! Bonus!
Trevor was practically bobbing up and down on Palla's back as the dragon took measured strides behind Demetra, who was taking point while clad in her "fire-proof" gear. According to Dee, this venture was too dangerous for her alone to protect him, so he was to stay on Palla's back at all times just in case. To be totally honest, Trevor was about 90% sure he was gonna break that rule at some point during today's venture. He smirked at the thought.
They'd been walking for about fifteen minutes since arriving at the general area of the sightings, and now that they were a satisfactory distance in, Dee was asking about the plan. Trevor found that question funny, and made it known when he crossed his arms and chuckled at her. He'd been waiting for this, and he exchanged glances with Palla before answering, to make sure she was ready. People could say what they wanted about Dragon facial expressions, but he would swear she smirked at him.
"I was thinking... we wing it!"
Trevor spread his arms, and Palla spread her wings at that moment to emphasize the joke. And they both proceeded to stare expectantly at Dee for a long moment.
Dee could tell immediately, by the way Trevor and Palla shared a very distinct look (not for the first time, and definitely not for the last), that the two of them were sharing some sort of inside joke or plan. Trevor had always gotten on with Palla so easily, and though Palla was her dragon and the bond between them was true, the bond between Trevor and Palla was an entirely different sort - it had taken Dee a month to get close to the dragon, but Trevor had been barely a moment before the two were practically best friends. They had all been travelling together long enough for her to know that something was coming next, and she was not disappointed.
Trevor's response to her question was that they should wing it, and as he spread his arms out dramatically Palla spread out her wings like, 'Get it? Wing it?' and then the two of them stonefaced stared at her, deadpan as anything, waiting. After a tense four seconds of silence between them as they all looked at each other seriously, Dee burst out laughing. On her bad days, the days when the world seemed a little darker and colder and Demetra followed suit, Tevor's jokes did nothing but grate on her, but on her good days they usually got a solid laugh. On her too-good days, the days when it felt like everything was almost too bright, like everything was faster and better and she could do anything, she found them uproariously hilarious.
When her laughter finally subsided and she brushed some laugh-tears out of her eyes she chuckled once more and said, "Sounds like a perfect plan, oh fearless leader. Hopefully the beast isn't afraid of dragons, or terrible jokes." She said the joke was terrible, but she clearly thought it was funny as hell. Without proper tracks to go by she decided they should just continue meandering their way through the grove until something happened. They had all day to get potentially stalked and attacked by this mystery fire beast, and it wasn't like they had any other plans.
